Aurora and Nova, bring on the opinions!

Having identical twin girls. I am still leaning towards these two names. I love that they both have celestial/scientific meanings and that they are both tied into the cosmos. Only issue is that we find Aurora a little hard to pronounce..We were really set on our boy names because they were both so strong and were both constellations, I love love loved the idea of naming after a constellation and being able to one day get a telescope and show them"their" constellation, but I just haven't liked the female sounding constellation names.

I am open to opinions. We also like the name Oriana, it means golden sunrise or something to that effect. I really like matchy names but not in an over the top way. Carina is another option, I find it beautiful and love the meaning (dear, beloved) but I don't just LOVE love it.

our middle names do not matter. I originally had them in the post but people were focusing on the way they sounded with the names too much. I personally never use my middle name, except on forms or when asked for it, and don't plan to ever call the twins by their middle names (well maybe if they are in trouble, lol) We have chosen family names for the MN's-one from my fiance's side and one from mine.

Re: Aurora and Nova, bring on the opinions!

  • Love Aurora Lynn, not as much a fan of Nova Leigh
  • Loading the player...
  • Any reason? Just don't like the sound of it?

  • I agree with PP. Don't care for Nova Leigh either. Nova is NMS but I think it could work with a different MN. Maybe a two syllable name.
  • I am unfamiliar with the acronym NMS..I've been on the Bump for months now but I guess I am still a newb! Can someone fill me in?

Also we chose Leigh because it is a family name on my fiance's side, Lynn is a family name on my side.

Any suggestions for a better middle name?

  • NMS= Not my style
  • I like Nova, but not with Leigh. Aurora is nice, albeit a tad too Disney princessy for me. I would prefer Aurora Leigh and Nova Lynn.

  • I like Aurora but I do find it difficult to say. But I also have a DD with a speech disorder so I might just be sensitive to that. Nova is ok but not as lovely as aurora and I do not like it with Leigh at all. It runs together way too much for me.
  • I don't plan to introduce them by their middle names, so not too worried about it sounding like one. They will mainly just be Aurora and Nova, middle names upon request, lol.

I also don't like the Disney princessy thing, but I have liked this name since I was young before I even knew about Aurora being a fairy tale name :) (DAMN YOU MALEFICENT MOVIE)

Thanks for the opinions! I thought the negative would turn me off of Nova but I think it may be making me realize I DO want to use it.

As far as Nova being trendy, I had no idea..I have never heard of anyone using this name or wanting to use it :/  I actually liked it because I thought it was unique and had a good meaning that went well with the meaning for Aurora.

Thanks again for opinions. I will tell fiance about some of the other name suggestions as well. He is pretty set on Nova, I am the one who is iffy about it.

  • Oh and a quick side note: Nova also means new, young and in Native American means Chases Butterflies which I also love! We have a small percentage of Chickasaw in us.

  • We could do away with the theme altogether. I also like the name Harmony...Aurora and Harmony anyone?

  • I like Aurora and Nova together.

The only thing I don't love is Leigh in the MN spot for Nova-- because said out loud it sort of sounds like "Novalee".  it's not a huge deal though if the name Leigh has significance to you.

Yay someone actually likes it! Not worried about it running together because I NEVER use my middle name and don't plan to use theirs except when necessary. It will be one of those things that you just tell people if they ask, ya kno?

    Still considering other names though.

  • I agree with PP.  Love Aurora Lynn, hate Nova Leigh.  Lynn and Leigh are also pretty boring in the middle name department, there are lots of other great options out there.  I like nature related names like birds and flowers in the MN spot for example.
I agree they are boring but they're family names. All the girls on my side (myself included) have the middle name Lynn and the girls on my fiance's side have the middle name Leigh. Not worried about the middle names too much as we don't plan on ever using them, just on forms or if asked specifically what they are.

I guess I should have said I was mainly just wanting opinions on Aurora and Nova together :) I am open to suggestions for better middle names though!

I love Aurora Lynn. Classy and elegant, but whimsical and uncommon. Nova feels like it is trying very hard to be special, to me. As my dear wifey, MauiBliss, pointed out on another thread, a nova, in scientific terms, is basically a nuclear explosion. The more I think about it, the more I feel like Nova is really not good. NMS = Not my style. I like Oriana, but I think Aurora and Oriana are WAY too matchy, especially with already fairly matchy mns.

So I say go back to the drawing board for twin #2's fn. Some more suggestions (may be repeats from previous thread):

    Aurora Lynn and Vesper Leigh

    Aurora Lynn and Astraea Leigh

    Aurora Lynn and Esther Leigh

Aurora Lynn and Iris Leigh (Iris = goddess of the rainbow)

    Aurora Lynn and Andromeda Leigh

    Aurora Lynn and Artemis Leigh

    Aurora Lynn and Maris Leigh

    Aurora Lynn and Mira Leigh

    Aurora Lynn and Nereida Leigh

Vesper is nice. Will let the fiance know about that one and see what he thinks!

I don't hate Nova its def NMS but now that I know a little girl Nova its grown on me because she is cute. However, they stuck with the theme and named their son Ma.rs Jaxs.on so uh there is that..

We can!?! That would be nice! I don't like Harmony, but I love Harmonia! Other suggestions ignoring the theme:

    Aurora Lynn and Julia Leigh

    Aurora Lynn and Natalia Leigh

    Aurora Lynn and Isadora Leigh

    Aurora Lynn and Alice Leigh

    Aurora Lynn and Hermione Leigh

    Aurora Lynn and Evangeline Leigh

    Aurora Lynn and Gwendolen Leigh

    Aurora Lynn and Sabina Leigh

    Aurora Lynn and Valentina Leigh

    Aurora Lynn and Octavia Leigh

    Aurora Lynn and Miranda Leigh

    Aurora Lynn and Francesca Leigh

    Aurora Lynn and Raphaela Leigh

    Aurora Lynn and Beatrix Leigh

    Aurora Lynn and Cressida Leigh

    Aurora Lynn and Georgiana Leigh

    Aurora Lynn and Freya Leigh

    Aurora Lynn and Iona Leigh

    Aurora Lynn and Saskia Leigh

I guess we can since I know how Bumpers hate themes! lol.

Appreciate the names but none of them are standing out to me as the one at the moment. I guess they are NMS.

  • Aurora and Carina anyone?

This is my favorite of the names you've put out there.
Aurora is one of my absolute favorite names on paper but I get abit tongue tied trying to say it so it's not an option for me to ever use :(

  • Gonna get the grandmas opinion on Carina. I already know she loves Aurora.

Carina is a constellation and also means dear, beloved. It is growing on me even more.

Middle name suggestions? Carina Leigh sound ok so we can stick with the family names? Or maybe just use Lynn for both? Or maybe scrap the Lynn and Leigh thing and start from scratch on middle names?

  • Any reason? Just don't like the sound of it?

I'm not 100% sure really...I think maybe the first name/middle name combo, so ya the sound I guess. I like them both ok separately. I think there's probably some other names of that style that could be better than Nova

    Aurora Lynn & Stella Leigh
    Aurora Lynn & Mona Leigh
    Aurora Lynn & Estella Leigh
    Aurora Lynn & Allita Leigh
    Aurora Lynn & Eliana Leigh
    Aurora Lynn & Selena Leigh
    Aurora Lynn & Chandra Leigh
    Aurora Lynn & Danica Leigh
    Aurora Lynn & Celia Leigh
    Aurora Lynn & Cressida Leigh
    Aurora Lynn & Demetria Leigh
    Aurora Lynn & Portia Leigh
    Aurora Lynn & Mira Leigh
    Aurora Lynn & Ophelia Leigh
    Aurora Lynn & Seraphina Leigh
  • I still like Nova for your second girl's name, but Carina is also lovely.

I think if you pick Carina, stick with Lynn and Leigh.

  • It is so hard to pick two names at once! Ahhhhhhhhhhhhh! I swear someone always likes one but doesn't like the other...or else I like one name a lot but can't find something I love to go with it...picking two middle names is hard as well! Grrrrrrrr. I'm cranky today I think.

I think I will just have a few names picked out and then when they are born I will just "know" which names belong to them. That's my hope anyways.

I think I will just have a few names picke
Honestly, you will never find a name that everyone loves. I have family and friends that aren't keen on the name we chose for our daughter (and others who love it) but it doesn't make them love her any less. It was hard enough for hubby and I to find names we both liked, we would have had serious problems had we have taken everyone's opinions into consideration. Yes, it's always nice when others love the name you've chosen but don't let other people's opinions make up your mind.

Just for the record, I love the idea of having family names as middle names (though we did not do this) and I'd go with one name from your side and one name for your partners for your twins if you do stick to that thought.
  • Do not like. Aurora Lynn sounds juvenile to me, and Nova Leigh sounds like you're trying too hard
  • I personally think Nova is a pretty name, but unfortunately I always think about the old car that was released called the Nova and they had to rename it in Spanish speaking companies because it translated to "no go".
  • I like aurora but i agree that it's hard to say. I like nova too, but not with Leigh as a middle name and with aurora.
  • I love aurora and nova!!

I just don't like the middle names. They are filler names IMO and not good ones.
  • bromios said:

I've never understood why people find Aurora hard to say, especially since my two and a half year old son (who has a very slight speech delay) can say it almost perfectly...

Yes but he has a lot of practice since it his sisters name. My DD has a speech disorder and she can't say it now at all so as to be understood by strangers (and she will be 4 next month). She doesn't say it often obviously but she struggles with lots of R words.

R is a very difficult speech sounds for children/people with articulation disorders. It is not abnormal for children to struggle with R until they are 8 or 9. I'm sure I think about it more than most but it would be very difficult to deal with if you have those issues.
  • I like Aurora but not Nova.

I love Aurora and Stella together. It still has the theme you're going for and they are both very nice names.

Although she won't the say the names altogether that often, you might as well pick something with a decent flow. Nova Leigh just doesn't work IMO. But neither does Stella Leigh.

What about Aurora Leigh and Stella Lynn?

  • I love Carina! Definitely use that. Aurora and Nova are both just okay for me, but I don't care for them together.

  • I like both names, along with some of the suggestions--Stella! I don't know why, but Nova feels incomplete to me compared to Aurora. Also, I think Oriana would match Aurora more.
  • I love the suggestion of Lyra, plus that is the name of the child heroine in His Dark Materials.
  • I find all three names: Aurora, Nova, and Carina just beautiful.  The middle name is no big deal, both Lynn and Leigh work with all options, but if it really is cumbersome and you choose Nova, just switch it like another p said to Aurora Leigh and Nova Lynn.  Boom. solved
  • I love aurora and nova!! I just don't like the middle names. They are filler names IMO and not good ones.
    They're family names, but thanks!
