If one gets sick, do they both get sick?

my girls are 9 months and we have been lucky to have no real sicknesses yet, but my baby B came down with croup over the weekend. I'm wondering if I can prevent her from giving it to baby A or if it's just inevitable that thd other will get it? We usually are lax about sharing pacis, spoons, bottles, toys but Ive tried to keep them separate.

Re: If one gets sick, do they both get sick?

  • For my kids, no. One has gotten croup a few times without the other getting it. They tend to get sick in different ways, too. One will have a cough and stuffy nose, the other will have a slight fever or loose poops and diaper rash. My oldest prob brings it all home, but he rarely gets sick himself. There's no rhyme or reason in our house.

  • For us, yes, the other has always gotten sick if one has. It's almost to the point where I just try to expedite the inevitable infection so as to minimize the period during which only one is sick.

  • Most stuff they both get, but Simon is always sick for several days longer than Jamie. Jamie's rarely sick for more than a couple of days, while Simon can be sick for a whole week or two with the same bug.

All of this. We are on our 4th cold right now. The weird thing is that my husband has gotten 3 of the 4, and I have only gotten 2 of the 4 (including the current one, which is awful)

The only time they didn't share an illness was when Alex was throwing up and having the poops. I think hers was a reaction from her shots earlier that week but the doctor vehemently argued with me that she had a stomach bug. No one else got it though so....

  • Usually, yes, if one is sick, the second will eventually get it.  However, one of my twins was diagnosed with RSV a week ago Monday, and on the following Saturday the second one with croup.  Both diseases have been going around the daycare.  Fun fun ;)
They don't both get things to the same extremes as each other though, one will usually have a worse time of it than the other, just depends...
Throw in teething and it's wonderful ;)

TTC since May 2006. After 3 failed Clomid cycles, 2 failed Injectibles/IUIs, 2 failed IVFs and 1 failed FET, we moved on to adoption!
