Does your LO still use a pacifier?

DD is very attached to her pacifier or "tete" as she calls it.  She uses is to sleep and nap and now wants it during the day.  We try to take it away, pretend that it's lost or that the bird took it away, and try to entertain her with something else but she will just ask, ask, and ask for it until we give it to her.  After this weekend I'm thinking of taking it away from her.  I was thinking of doing it over the holiday weekend (after Christmas) since I'll be home with her/  Everyone keeps telling me that I should wait till after the new baby comes (I'm due in February) since that in itself is an adjustment.  I'm just torn on what's best for her.  Is your LO still using a pacifier?  If so, when are you planning to take it away?

Re: Does your LO still use a pacifier?

  • Yes, DD still uses one. We try to limit it to sleeping and long car rides, but honestly I'm kind of lax about it at home. She does not use one or ask for one when she's engaged with playing with other kids, but if she's at home she might ask for it or go looking for it in her crib. At daycare she uses it for naps only, and it is otherwise put away in her cubby.

We have a trip to Florida planned in a couple weeks, so we are definitely not planning to change anything before that. But at this point I'm kind of leaning towards waiting until she can understand giving it to the paci fairy or something of that sort. I think we'll start to get more strict about keeping it out of sight though.

  • Yes, but she only is allowed to use it for nap and bed time. Typically it's already out when she wakes up, but she does like it to fall asleep. I want to get rid of it eventually. Probably will wait till right before baby comes so she can become the "big sister" and leave pacis for babies. I definitely want it gone long before 3.

  • Ds still uses his, we have gone back and forth so many times on taking it away. Like you, baby due in a couple weeks and I don't want to do anything drastic around that time, not knowing how he will react to the whole situation. We will definitely wean before 3 (I also said he would be weaned before 18 months)..
Now he only has it at nap and bed time & occasionally when he is awake if he is having a hard day. Our dentist said that kids teeth can shift because of the paci, which bens definitly has, but before age 5 if weaned the teeth can shift and align properly again because of all of the growing and moving of the mouth. We will NOT have a 4 year old on paci... But I don't mind him having one for the time being at 2

  • We got rid of DS's soother about 6 weeks before DS#2 was born. He loved his "soo soo". He used it for naps, bed, car rides or any time he was sick. We just decided to throw them all away one morning and never looked back. He asked for it for the first couple days but that was it. When the baby came he saw the new soothers and looked at it and asked for soo soo but I said it was for his brother. He looks at it occasionally but we haven't had any issues so far. we just wanted to get him off it before baby came so there wasn't a fight and so far we haven't regretted our decision at all.

  • We never really used one, but I wanted to share how my cousin's son gave them up.

My cousin's son used one constantly. His sister was born when he was about 18 months. My cousin told him that the baby needed them and that since he was now a big brother, he no longer did. She wasn't going to push the issue if he still wanted it at night, but that first night he had put all of them in her crib all by himself. He never touched one again.

  • J never did use a pacifier, he actually isn't too attached to anything really. He loves his Teddy and his blue blanket, but if he does't have them he still sleeps. I think we got lucky! GL!

  • Yes, for sleeping and long car rides. I am due in February and don't plan on taking it away before then.

I tell myself it is helping him teeth those last molars, but really I just don't feel like taking away something that brings him comfort.

  • DD loves hers. Before the babies came, we limited it to just bed times and car. She has had somewhat of a hard transition to the babies that now she wants it all the time. I have also noticed that she chews a lot on it, so I am wondering if she is getting close to getting the two year molars.

I think once the house calms down and we get on a routine (lol) we will go back to bed time and car, then wean it away.

Yep, us too. I don't even care anymore, it helps her sleep!!!
Our little Samosa arrives in January!
  • Yes for sleeping, naps and sometimes in the car because it takes so long to get anywhere in this city. We took it away when she was about 18 months old and it was okay, she definitely didn't sleep as well without it and I think she'd be really sad if I took it from her now.

Not sure when the "goal" to get rid of it is. We're moving in May and it is going to be hard on her, 3 houses in 2 months before we "settle down" for a little while. I might try right after she turns 2 and if it's not easy I'll wait until we're "settled" in July.
  • Thanks everyone!  At least I know I'm not in the same boat.  @ConstanceGoodspeed I'm due in February too!  February 24th..you?
