Weight Gain Concerns...

So it feels like the weight gain has become uncontrollable... I am now 23 weeks and have gained about 30 lbs already, with steady gain still continuing. I exercise very regularly and eat fairly healthy, but the weight keeps adding on. I don't feel or look heavier, I'm just more dense I guess? I'm really worried about the extra weight gain for the fear of preeclampsia, preterm labor, and other weight gain pregnancy related issues. I feel like with all my efforts to control the weight gain, it still is adding up, and I don't know what to do or how concerned to be. Thoughts? How concerned should I be and what can I do? Anyone else in the same boat?

I'm going to a Birthing Center with midwives, some of them have expressed slight concern, while others have said my weight gain has been ok with no need for concern. I'm still healthy, with healthy bp and everything else. So I'm getting mixed responses and not sure what to think...

Re: Weight Gain Concerns...

  • Is your doctor concerned? I would start with asking him.

  • what does your doctor say about your weight gain? (<< is a good place to start)  it is normal to worry about things.  were you "underweight" to begin with?

    ask your doctor.

Everyone gains differently.  I started gaining weight the second my pee stick dried but haven't gained a pound since 16 weeks (I am trying very hard to watch what I eat and exercise though).  You could just be one of those people that gain more in pregnancy.  If you are concerned, I would take a look at your diet.  Perhaps you are eating more than you realize and overestimating your calorie burn.  Try tracking your food intake for a week or two and see if you can see a pattern.

  • Short reply: do an early Gestational Diabetes test and see a nutritionist for a general diet consultation if you are worried

    Long reply:

While 30 pounds isn't great, it isn't too far beyond "typical" yet.  I suggest you ask your midwives for a referral to a nutritionist to evaluate your diet and nutrition goals - to make sure that you are on track for eating a healthy balanced diet.

And have an early Gestational Diabetes screening done to be sure you don't have an underlying cause for the weight gain.  Uncontrolled GD can cause the pound to creep on faster than normal.

Some women just gain...others have medical causes for things to get a little beyond typical.  It is good that you are paying attention to it, but don't stress until the medical professionals tell you to worry.

  • I think every pregnancy is different, and as long as you are trying your best to stay healthy, I wouldn't worry too much about weight gain. With my first I gained 60, my second I gained 45, and this time I am still -4lbs not gaining anything. All three times I ate healthy (with normal pregnancy cravings and occasional treats) and excersized, but your body will gain what it needs to an everyone is different. Def talk to your dr to make sure it's not a medical issue, but I wouldn't stress.
  • I'm in the exact same boat. This wasn't the case during my first pregnancy so the seeing the scale has been a bit of a shock. My midwife does not seem concerned, but I'm also worried about potential high risk issues creeping up. As long as you aren't gorging yourself on junk food, don't beat yourself up! I know, easier said than done.

  • I had just lost 90 pounds before I got pregnant. I have gained about 40 of it back as of now. I admit I eat more chocolate then I may have before but really it's not beyond the normal range and my choice of food is usually fruit.(I'll put a hurting on some bananas, let me tell ya) I can literally walk for hrs with SO and ride my bike for hours. I am actually really active. But I just have to refuse to look at the scale anymore. It has depressed me more and more. And I have a wedding in October to be ready for!

  • I've gained the same. My doctor isn't concerned. Scares the crap out of me but this isn't my first rodeo and it's just what my body does. With the last two it came off fast post baby. I'm not a giant person to begin with so I think my body holds on to everything! My butt has grown as much as my belly :/
  • Zombieeeeee thread. And bc also- I literally cringe every time I see the word "weight" in a thread title.
