Shaving the "Downstairs" :)

So everyone maintains their lady parts differently, but for those of us who shave our bikini area I'm sure we are all experiencing the "I hope I didn't miss anything". How is everyone dealing with this? Any helpful hints? Also I was thinking of looking into a Brazillian wax about 3-4 weeks before I deliver to make sure I don't have to worry about it around my delivery/post delivery.. Any thoughts or past experiences?

Re: Shaving the "Downstairs" :)

  • I got a Brazilian a few weeks before my last delivery. I'm so happy I did it and will probably do it again. It does hurt a lot more but you can take a Tylenol before to help some.

  • I'm having this same problem! I'm debating waxing too. It alway hurt when I wasn't pregnant I'm terrified of how much it will hurt while pregnant.

I was thinking the same thing.. But I think of trying to shave before and after birth, and the pain may be worth it! Plus @misshart00 is right- maybe some Tylenol will take the edge off!
  • Ugh. This is the worst! I get so tired just shaving my legs, let alone other areas. And I have olive complection so my hair grows back like the next day, no joke. It's so pointless for me to shave! I want to do the Brazilian but I know how my face looks after I get my eyebrows done, I'm scared it'll be 100x worse down there. But I've heard waxing before delivery can actually help with postpartum business (able to keep things cleaner easier).
  • Ditto doing it by touch and trying to keep up with it everyday (better chance of not missing something). I wonder if bringing out a mirror would help...

  • Shaving is getting increasingly tiring and difficult, which, of course, means it's also becoming less frequent. Ugh.

I was actually wondering about waxing before delivery... I'm super sensitive and bled from waxing before (only done it once), but do you all think it's better in the long run to help with recovery and overall yuck?

  • I'm trying to pluck up the courage to have a wax, if that fails oh will have to help!

I did like it for after delivery. With everything else you have to deal with down there post partum, it was nice to not have to worry about keeping stuff clean.
  • One word. Mirror!

I have to use a mirror so I can see what's going on there. I didn't once and there was a patch I missed. Very weird looking. Lol

  • I have been going by feel mostly. And I haven't done my legs in forever. I am tempted to ask my hubby to shave them for me... as for waxing, I couldn't deal with the pain. And going Brazilian isn't always the best idea. That hair is there for a reason. It helps keep bacteria and infection away in its own way. So, I'd think especially after birth, that aspect would be somewhat important.
  • Been contiplating all this lately. Probably more than I should. I would love a Brazilian but is any one else more worried about the growing out process while trying to heal down there? Not gonna lie...it's a lil itchy. Either way...gotta get some plan going!
  • I have a hand mirror that I'm able to prop up in front of me and I just make DH help me up and down in the shower so I can sit on the shower floor. Trying to shave by touch was terrifying the few times I tried it. I'm definitely going Brazilian from now until I've healed after baby, though, cos it's getting hard to reach around my belly and DH is gone more now that he's at his new job so I'm limited on times I can do it myself. If I don't have to do it myself anymore then I'm not going to lol ;)

  • Waxing all the way! I stopped shaving a few years ago and only wax so that has gotten me used to the "pain"... But the lady I go to makes it as painless as possible. I made my next appt 2 weeks out from my due date so I'm as "clean" as possible (assuming I don't go early!)... My wax lady did say she has women coming in up until their due date, but that's cutting it a little too close for me, lol
  • I've used a mirror that can stand up on its own. I get in the tub, wet down the area, add conditioner, and go for it. The conditioner helps soften the hair so it's easier to get it all. I've also tried nair for bikini area without much luck.
  • I thought about asking y'all about who is still shaving just the other day and then, of course, forgot about it. I've had to give up completely because it's just too damn difficult to reach my nether regions. It is so frustrating because I can't stand being fuzzy down there... My SO and I are too nervous about him helping out down there so I've just become a wooly mammoth (sorry, tmi). I've been wanting to invest in one of those little electric trimmers so that at least I can be trimmed up if not completely hairless. ::sigh:: I can't wait to access my body effortlessly again.
  • I started getting sugar waxed again recently. I hate the itching after shaving as it grows and i got waxed all summer so i got "used to" the pain as much as one can. ;-) i plan to keep getting waxed every 3 weeks until baby comes, then decide if I want to continue after the 6-8 weeks of postpartum bleeding finishes up.

  • Yeah, I'm probably going to brave a Brazilian a few weeks before. Shit, if I wait til 38 weeks, the sheer terror and pain might send me into labor! Until then I'm going in blind, using a quality razor to prevent any cuts!
  • My hubby does it for me lol
  • been keeping up with brazilians the whole pregnancy, every 4 weeks.  pretty glad at this point otherwise i'd have a forest going for sure.

  • @gelitan29 yes! the growing back phase is WAY WAY worse for me than the actual 15 minute sugaring/waxing process.  I really don't think the pain is that bad to be honest.  Yes it hurts but its bearable.  However, I get terrible ingrown hairs. :-( I"ve tried pretty much everything in thepast to prevent and minimize them with little to no success.  So my primary hesitation with getting a Brazilian prior to birth is the discomfort that comes about a month later when it starts growing back.  If I'm already uncomfortable down there due to birth I don't want to add to it with itchy hair and ingrowns.  But I would love to be nice and smooth going into delivery. I've very torn about this.

In the meantime I've been using an electric razor and a mirror. Its not fun or pretty but the end result is better than fuzziness, lol.

  • I go in blind and hope for the best. Probably looks like I have mange or something, but IDGAF.

  • Brazilians are the bests! Try finding a place that uses hard wax. It adheres to the hair vs the skin like soft wax. It's much more gentle in that area. Remember to breathe and exhale when they pull. It's honestly not that bad and you won't want to stop after you start.

@chcaggie1 this is what I was gonna suggest too.  The hard wax makes all the difference for me.  That + exfoliating and I have very little issue with ingrowns/discomfort growing back.

  • I use a mirror that has a stand. Mine is also one that doesn't fog up. At the same time I can still see most of my private area. I have carried super low the whole pregnancy. I don't even have a bump up top. And Nair doesn't do crap for me.!
  • Team blind
..so far so good just takes a while. X_X
  • This has been my biggest issue since getting pregnant. I don't remember who I stole this from but its like "Helen Keller and Edward Scissorhands went to town" down there.

I cannot stand the itchiness of the hair growing back and I really want to get a brazilian but I recently read it is 100x worse when your are pregnant. So now I am more terrified. I guess it can't hurt more than labor and delivery though.
I say give it a try :) honestly for me it has been less painful since being preggers so everyone is different. One of my girlfriends kept telling me it was going to get worse as I get further along but so far so good!
  • I actually had my first bad experience tonight. Apparently she was in a super low position so I couldn't see anything. I went in blind. With my leg propped up. Lost my balance. Thought I was bleeding to death. I hate that water makes blood look so much worse. It was just a tiny knick. I finished up what I thought was essential and got the hell out of there before I did any actually serious damage.
  • I've basically stopped shaving because I can't see anything! Even with a mirror is very difficult for me. But come 35 weeks my sister who is a professional at a salon will be helping me trim and shave down there till I go into labor. My DH won't help me and I'd like to be atleast neat and clean for PP! My sister refuses to do s Brazilian for me cause she's afraid of hurting me.
  • I started doing brazilian waxing again since i really cant see what im doing now and asking my husband to do it? Ya ill pass -_- my advice would be try to do it few times before the last month of delivery just in case bcoz some ppl do develop reaction towards waxing during pregnancy, and u dont want that when u give birth. U would wanna get a professional that can do it within 5-30 min MAX! bcoz trust me i had one that lasts an hour and u dont want that
  • I was thinking of going the 50 Shades of Grey route (i.e. I'll ask my husband for help)...but I'm guessing it won't be nearly as kinky/sexy with a giant belly.

An hour??? Yeah definitely not! Lol
  • I go by touch and then get my OH to check it over afterwards, tried using a mirror but it steamed up and couldn't see, also prefer to use both hands so I don't cut anything, I have tried waxing but for me it's just too painful to want to do it to prepare for labour, plus you never know when it'll happen so you may have to go for a couple before LO arrives! No thank you
  • Waxing for the first time, especially after shaving, may not be the best idea right before delivery. Gonna hurt like all the dickens! Stop shaving and try one or two waxes prior so it thins out the hair. I wax regularly and it isn't bad at all but after shaving it's painful
