How many hours do you go in between feedings?

I am EBF. DS will be 6 wks on Wed. Ive been feeding him during the day every 3 hours At night its between 3-5. I only get that time frame if he is sleeping on my chest tho. If I put him in the r n p its like 45 min then I have to get him back to sleep. Im thinking he has reflux (I am taking him to the PCP tomm). My question is do I let him sleep and wake when he is hungry? I wouldnt let him go past the 5 hr mark. Bc when I wake him he cries and I read that causes him to sick air in. What do you ladies do? Wake baby at certain point? Or let sleep until baby tells u they are ready to eat?

    If his weight gain is good, you don't have to wake to feed at 6 weeks.

    I feed on demand and my LO usually feeds every 3 hours, sometimes 4. I am ready for it to be more consistently 4-5 hours between feedings.

    @sj+cm131‌ yeah he has gained 2 lbs since his first weight check. At his 4 wk check up he gained 9 oz in 9 days. So I am assuming I can let him sleep and wake on his own to eat.

    Also with me waiting to feed on demand will that affect my supply?

    DD was 5wks yesterday. She feeds every 2hrs during the day but only wakes up once at night to feed. At night she goes 5.5-6.5hrs then eats then sleeps another 3.5-4.5hrs. This has been pretty consistent since 3wks

    This sounds like my baby.  If he's eaten recently, we pass off his signs as digestion and offer a pacifier but it's still hard and confusing, especially when it happens at night.  Our next ped appt is this week, I will bring this up.

    Yep we have this problem too, it's so hard. :( I'm hoping we can make it until her 1 month appointment next Monday. The fussy-ness is increasing and her sleeping is decreasing. :(

    Thanks @kegcrc From what I'm reading, I think he has silent reflux.  He doesn't spit up a lot, but many times I think he is going to and nothing comes out, and he has many of the other symptoms.  It's been getting worse the last few days, and my giant puffy eyes can attest to this.  I'm so glad I read this tonight, I would have never put the pieces together or realize what is happening should be discussed with the pediatrician.

    I just wanted to update you all as I took my LO to the doctor this morning. The doctor said that the most concerning about my story is that I told him she was spitting up 2+ hrs after eating. He said that since this is happening it is indicative of acid reflux. He prescribed her zantac and we took our first dose today. She's been pretty inconsistent with her discomfort (this morning she slept like a dream, of course) making me feel like she's calling my bluff but we plan to use the medication for a couple weeks and see what's changed. I'm hoping it makes a difference in her fussiness and tendency to only catnap during the day, as well as her frequent wet hiccups and discomfort. Thanks kegcrc for your advice which prompted me to go in and be seen sooner than later!

    It may effect your supply, but shouldn't be a problem as you body produces what baby eats.  If he's only waking to eat a few times during the night your body will adjust to that.  If you want to keep your supply up you can get up between feeds and pump a bit.

    Generally from the beginning os one feeding tot he beginning of the next it's been 3 hours.  I don't wake baby to feed; she will wake to eat when she is hungry.  Every time I've woken a child to feed I have a hard time keeping them awake long enough to nurse.

    Once my boy got to sleep last night it wasn't too bad a night or morning. We still went and got a prescription. Around 5 or 6 he reminded us why we went in! My doc told us to dose in the morning, so we'll see how it goes. She also said it can take a few weeks for the damage to heal, but everyone I see says the meds helped their babies pretty quickly. Crossing fingers for all of us!
