First time mom

hi I'm a ftm. My baby is still not sleeping long stretches and waking up during the night every two hours to eat. She will eat for 5-7 min and then fall asleep. Can anyone relate? Also how long is your lo able to stay awake?

Re: First time mom

  • How old is your baby? Have you spoken to the pediatrian?

My lo is up most of the day but he will be 12 weeks in Friday.

Try a cold wash cloth to stimulate baby during feeding.

  • She is two months old as of yesterday. she has been napping a little better but not as long as she used to. maybe cause she is getting older now...
  • Are you breastfeeding or bottle feeding? I had the same problem with my son and it turned out that he was filling up on the thin foremilk and wasn't getting enough of the fatty hind milk and therefore wasn't staying full very long. I also had a forceful let down and he'd be full after 5 minutes of nursing just to be hungry again soon after. Just might be something to check into! Good luck and I hope you can figure it out soon :)
  • This is normal. :) She probably has become a more efficient nurser and wakes to fill her tummy and then goes back to sleep. Hopefully she will start to sleep longer stretches for you soon. Just keep an eye on her diaper output and disposition to know that she's getting enough milk.

  • I'm breastfeeding her. I also have a forceful letdown I believe. Good idea to check on it. Thanks.
  • Thanks ladies! We will see her ped in January so I'll ask questions then. I'm also thinking she is not getting the fatty milk, whatever is called??
  • Good idea! I'll try that!
  • So what did you end up doing?
  • Fatty milk is hindmilk. Green poop is a telltale sign she isnt getting enough. If this is the case you can try blockfeeding (4 hrs per boob) to make sure you drain the boob completely. This can reduce supply though but if she isn't getting enough hindmilk you might be in an oversupply situation anyway.

  • I avoid DD snack-feed as much as possible--which means that I try to give her a full feeding at a time--and that usually gives us longer stretches of sleep. Usually when she feeds for only a few minutes I know she will be waking up within a couple of hours and she usually does. Shoot for full feedings.
