We took my dd to the ER as a baby because she had retractions, wheezing, and croupy cough overnight. She sounded like she was really struggling to breathe. She got the albuterol treatment and perked up fast. The er staff confirmed she absolutely needed to be there- babies who can't breathe are the reason there are ERs. :-)
As she's gotten older she will occasionally still get that cough overnight. Now that she's bigger, we treat at home. She's old enough now to tell us how she's feeling and if she can't breathe; fortunately that hasn't happened (knock on wood!).
ETA: changed amoxicillin to albuterol, brain fart!

Croup is so scary! Our son has only had it once but my nieces and nephews get it like 4 times a year. They have all had to get the nebulizer treatments. If it were me I would not hesitate to take LO in if they seemed to be struggling to breathe. Good luck! Hazel just got over influenza which was scary too. Sickness go away!!
See that's the thing. He only coughs like 4 times an hour and his normal breathing is completely fine. But appointment is set for tomorrow just to be safe Sweet little angel is sleeping for now only 1 coughing episode since 7:30
One of our twins has it. We were in the ER with her Saturday night. (Urgent care closed 30 min before) She was raspy all day, but breathing ok. By bedtime she was wheezing and gasping. Cold air helped but not enough to get her to sleep. so we took her in. They gave her an epinephrine breathing treatment that helped tremendously. Then a pill the next day. She is on day 4 tmw and doing better but still not herself. Hoping my other baby doesn't get it...
