Flowers in the Attic by V.C. Andrews

It wasn't that she didn't love her children. She did. But there was a fortune at stake--a fortune that would assure their later happiness if she could keep the children a secret from her dying father.

So she and her mother hid her darlings away in an unused attic.

    Just for a little while.

But the brutal days swelled into agonizing years. Now Cathy, Chris, and the twins wait in their cramped and helpless world, stirred by adult dreams, adult desires, served a meager sustenance by an angry, superstitious grandmother who knows that the Devil works in dark and devious ways. Sometimes he sends children to do his work--children who--one by one--must be destroyed....

    Remember Me by Christopher Pike

Shari Cooper hadn't planned on dying, but four floors is a long way to fall. Her friends say she fell but Shari knew she had been murdered. Making a vow to herself to find her killer, Shari spies on her friends, and even enters their dreams. She also comes face-to-face with a nightmare from beyond the grave. The Shadow - a thing more horrible than death itself - is the key to Shari's death, and the only thing that can stop her murderer from murdering again.

Map of Time by Felix Palma

Set in Victorian London with characters real and imagined, The Map of Time boasts a triple play of intertwined plots in which a skeptical H.G. Wells is called upon to investigate purported incidents of time travel and to save lives and literary classics, including Dracula and The Time Machine, from being wiped from existence.

What happens if we change history? The author explores this question in the novel, weaving an historical fantasy as imaginative as it is exciting—a story full of love and adventure that transports readers to a haunting setting in Victorian London for their own taste of time travel.

    The Night Circus

The circus arrives without warning. No announcements precede it. It is simply there, when yesterday it was not. Within the black-and-white striped canvas tents is an utterly unique experience full of breathtaking amazements. It is called "Le Cirque des Reves," and it is only open at night.

But behind the scenes, a fierce competition is underway--a duel between two young magicians, Celia and Marco, who have been trained since childhood expressly for this purpose by their mercurial instructors. Unbeknownst to them, this is a game in which only one can be left standing, and the circus is but the stage for a remarkable battle of imagination and will. Despite themselves, however, Celia and Marco tumble headfirst into love - a deep, magical love that makes the lights flicker and the room grow warm whenever they so much as brush hands.

True love or not, the game must play out, and the fates of everyone involved, from the cast of extraordinary circus per-formers to the patrons, hang in the balance, suspended as precariously as the daring acrobats overhead.

    Gone Girl

On a warm summer morning in North Carthage, Missouri, it is Nick and Amy Dunne's fifth wedding anniversary. Presents are being wrapped and reservations are being made when Nick's clever and beautiful wife disappears from their rented McMansion on the Mississippi River. Husband-of-the-Year Nick isn't doing himself any favors with cringe-worthy daydreams about the slope and shape of his wife's head, but passages from Amy's diary reveal the alpha-girl perfectionist could have put anyone dangerously on edge. Under mounting pressure from the police and the media--as well as Amy's fiercely doting parents--the town golden boy parades an endless series of lies, deceits, and inappropriate behavior. Nick is oddly evasive, and he's definitely bitter--but is he really a killer?
As the cops close in, every couple in town is soon wondering how well they know the one that they love. With his twin sister, Margo, at his side, Nick stands by his innocence. Trouble is, if Nick didn't do it, where is that beautiful wife? And what was in that silvery gift box hidden in the back of her bedroom closet?

    Mr. Mercedes by Stephan King

In the frigid pre-dawn hours, in a distressed Midwestern city, hundreds of desperate unemployed folks are lined up for a spot at a job fair. Without warning, a lone driver plows through the crowd in a stolen Mercedes, running over the innocent, backing up, and charging again. Eight people are killed; fifteen are wounded. The killer escapes.

In another part of town, months later, a retired cop named Bill Hodges is still haunted by the unsolved crime. When he gets a crazed letter from someone who self-identifies as the "perk" and threatens an even more diabolical attack, Hodges wakes up from his depressed and vacant retirement, hell-bent on preventing another tragedy.

Brady Hartfield lives with his alcoholic mother in the house where he was born. He loved the feel of death under the wheels of the Mercedes, and he wants that rush again.

Only Bill Hodges, with a couple of highly unlikely allies, can apprehend the killer before he strikes again. And they have no time to lose, because Brady’s next mission, if it succeeds, will kill or maim thousands.

Mr. Mercedes is a war between good and evil, from the master of suspense whose insight into the mind of this obsessed, insane killer is chilling and unforgettable.

    Red Tent by Anita

Her name is Dinah. In the Bible, her life is only hinted at in a brief and violent detour within the more familiar chapters of the Book of Genesis that are about her father, Jacob, and his dozen sons. Told in Dinah's voice, this novel reveals the traditions and turmoils of ancient womanhood--the world of the red tent. It begins with the story of her mothers--Leah, Rachel, Zilpah, and Bilhah--the four wives of Jacob. They love Dinah and give her gifts that sustain her through a hard-working youth, a calling to midwifery, and a new home in a foreign land. Dinah's story reaches out from a remarkable period of early history and creates an intimate connection with the past. Deeply affecting, The Red Tent combines rich storytelling with a valuable achievement in modern fiction: a new view of biblical women's society.

    Girl with the Dragon Tattoo

Mikael Blomkvist, a once-respected financial journalist, watches his professional life rapidly crumble around him. Prospects appear bleak until an unexpected (and unsettling) offer to resurrect his name is extended by an old-school titan of Swedish industry. The catch—and there's always a catch—is that Blomkvist must first spend a year researching a mysterious disappearance that has remained unsolved for nearly four decades. With few other options, he accepts and enlists the help of investigator Lisbeth Salander, a misunderstood genius with a cache of authority issues. Little is as it seems in Larsson's novel, but there is at least one constant: you really don't want to mess with the girl with the dragon tattoo.

    Her Husband's Harlot

Historical fiction with quite a few sexy bits thrown in. It's a super light and easy read.

  • I forgot to put that I was joking.

  • I already read the night circus and loved it!

I voted. I picked a trashy, easy to read one. Whenever I have done a book club, I have found people don't actually do it unless you give them a quick, easy read.

I picked that with you in mind.
  • Tl;dr I am up for anything. That last post did not say anything important lol.

Lol. I picked Mr. Mercedes because I've been wanting to read it, but I've never read flowers in the attic so I downloaded that too.

Flowers in the attic is so good. I reread the sex parts a million times. I was like ten, fwiw.

I did too. I did the same with quite a few of her books. There was so much that I didn't understand but Omg did it blow my mind.
  • @guiltypleasures‌ you did an awesome job with this. Thank you so much!

Diiiiiitto. Wasn't there one with "Lace" in its title? That one was hot.
I don't remember one with Lace in the title. I'm trying to remember the series where the main Character marries the guy who she always thought was her brother. I really want to read My Sweet Audrina again too.
  • I really want to rebuild the book collection that I had when I was a kid. There are so many books that I miss.
  • https://www.completevca.com/library.shtml A list and summery of all the V.C. Andrews books.
  • My Sweet Audrina blew my mind when I read it.

I know right!! It still blows my mind when I read it today.
  • Poll should close tomorrow, to give at least 24hrs for people to vote.

    Sound good @guiltypleasures‌

That sounds fine. We can close it tomorrow at 5pm pst. That will give west coasters time to vote for Flowers in the Attic.

Agreed. It's gotta be Flowers in the Attic

I'm too much of a wimp to re read Remember Me.

  • I didn't really like Girl with the Dragon Tattoo. I wanted to love it but I just didn't.

That's the way I usually am with books that everyone raves about. Except Life of Pi. I fucking loved that book.

That was such a good book. There are a lot of other books that I wanted to love but didn't. I hate when a really popular book falls flat.
  • Sorry for the newbness here, but how exactly does this work? I would love an excuse to read for fun- in nursing school so although I read way too much, it's always heavy reading.

Me either. I never moved on in the series either.

This was so me, I read every V.C. Andrews book when I was a pre-teen. If anyone had bothered to look at which pages has the most creases, it was the sex parts.

After we pick a book we'll agree on a time to finish it and have weekly a weekly check in until the end date.
  • I'm not going to be too excited if Gone Girl wins but if it's what we pick I'll reread it.
  • I'm totally using this book club to come out of lurker status.

  • I'm not re-reading Gone Girl, but I do remember the book.  I also remember watching FITA with Kristy Swanson but I'm sure the book is awesome.  I'm game for CHRISTOPHER PIKE if we get a re-do vote.

  • Do you all want to do an extra poll with the top three picks? If everyone wants to do the top three I'll do another poll.

Yes...I just feel Gone Girl is like asking everyone to read The Hunger Games.  It's past its time.

That's how I feel. It was a good book but I'm over it now. I'd rather read anything else.
  • My book isn't even in the top three ::sobs::

    Top four?
You should have came back into the thread yelling for Christoper Pike again. I'm sure that would have gotten you a few votes.
  • This poll will be done in 3 hours. I'll put up the other one right after that's done. Please please please please get your votes in.  FLOWERS IN THE ATTIC IS AN AMAZING BOOK!!!!
  • ( . )Y( . ) for V.C. Andrews!!!
  • Omg people two three more votes and Flowers in the Attic would have won. I'll put the second poll up as soon as I get home. Someone else can do it if they want to. I might be awhile.
  • ::Rasies hand::

Read them all but the last one! What do I win?
