Preparing yourself with diapers

Hello, I wanted to prepare myself and buy diapers to have in stock but want opionions on how many packs of what sizes I should start with .... im guessing one pack of newborns since they grow sk fast but what about after? just to have an idea. Thanks!

Re: Preparing yourself with diapers

  • this is a tough one - some babies are in some sizes longer than others and some just skip a size. Also you might find that one brand doesn't work well for you or baby has a reaction to it.

I would say maybe buy small packages of a few different brands - but wouldn't go crazy until you know what works for you.

FYI, my 7lbs daughter actually ended up starting off in premies for the first month and then was in newborns for awhile after that.

  • Not all brands work for all babies. Some babies dont wear newborn diapers for long. I would get maybe a pack or two of newborns and a pack or two of sizes 1s. Maybe try a few different brands and see what works for you. Huggies never worked for me. She shit thru every single one she ever wore. I had great luck with pampers swaddlers for newborns and then moved to Luvs.

  • I would suggest starting to buy size 1. Newborn diapers are not always needed - i know in the differnet hospitals i have delivered in, they have provided me with plenty of newborn diapers so they may cover you! And I agree with the previous posts...buy little packs to make sure you like the brand. I would say going to with Pampers Swaddlers is a safe bet!

  • Start setting aside money, either in a savings account or gift cards to your preferred store. DS was out of NB after only a pack but then stayed in size 2 for what seemed like forever. Poor thing is still a bean pole with no back side, to keep his pants up.

  • I just bought a pack of 1s to have and if he is a tiny baby Ill have my mom run out and get some NBs.  I liked Pampers Swaddlers sensitive NB too
  • I've bought 2 packs of pampers newborn. I'm stopping there.
  • I bought a box of Pampers Swaddlers in 1s only because I had a ridiculously cheap coupon. I will not buy any more because I know for a fact my sister asked for them on the shower invite (which I wasn't too pleased with due to the fact that I know some may not work for my baby). Oh well, I'm not going to be like that.

  • Ditto on gift carding it. I wouldn't want to have to return a bunch because of wrong size/ doesn't work for this kid/ etc.

  • Thanks a lot... very helpful!!!
  • People really panic about diapers, but I'd say we spend $40-$50 a month on diapers. Compared to how quickly they go through clothes and shoes over the first year, I'd suggest stocking up on season-appropriate clothing you find on sale. PJs, bottoms, tops, jackets/sweaters, socks, eventually shoes. And they grow out of everything so fast (or else you need clothes across seasons).

Personally, I never found diapers to put me out much, but keeping them in clothes that fit always seemed more expensive to me!

This. I never bought in advance. We just buy as we go. Once their growth stabilizes a bit, buy the big boxes of Huggies or Pampers (the 192 diaper packs). That'll last you for a month or more, and you can get them on sale for $37 sometimes.

  • I got a 50% off a monthly bundle code when I signed up with The Honest co.
  • We're using cloth prefolds from birth and like that they are so adjustable and should work on any baby under 10 lbs. We got the newborn size from green mountain diapers. There are several ways you can fold them and use a snappi to get a perfect fit. So this is a good option for a lot of people worried about size issues. Our newborn stash is 24 prefolds, 6 fitted workhorse diapers, 6 stay dry doublers, 3 wool covers, 2 adjustable pul covers, and 2 newborn "mommy's touch" covers to fit under the cord stump.

You should be changing your baby every 2 hours regardless of what type of diaper they're in to avoid rashes. So newborns will go through about 12 diapers a day or 84 a week. You may need more than you think!

  • YOU DO NOT HAVE TO CHANGE YOUR BABY'S DIAPER EVERY TWO HOURS. What the hell kind of bullshit advice is that? Change the baby when the diaper is wet and/or dirty. It's not rocket science.
I have to agree... I certainly don't wake my babies up every 2 hours round the clock to change their diapers. Certainly if they have a dirty diaper, I change it, but trust me when I tell you... if they start sleeping in blissful, much-needed 4+ hour stretches, you won't be waking them up to change a slightly wet diaper!

  • DH and I have bought a couple boxes of each size, the key however is to tape the receipt to the diaper box. That way if your LO does not do well in those diapers or you didnt use much of that size, you can easily return them.
