My dd is about to outgrow her infant car seat. She is 4 months and 27 inches. So she'll be moving to the convertible seat that my 2 yr old DS is using. He's 30lbs and 37 inches. What's the next step a harnessed booster or a regular booster seat?
I answered in your post on the Toddler board but what you want next is a combination seat. It can be used with a harness and then coverts to a booster seat when the child is ready to be boostered with the seatbelt. (This is assuming your DS is forward facing...if you're doing extended rear facing then you will need another convertible seat. If not, I would not purchase another convertible seat because you're not using one of the functions and many seats that say they can rear face, forward face and then booster are actually not great at one of those functions and are outgrown earlier than combination seats which can last your child much, much longer. I believe there is a new Graco seat that can do rear, forward and booster and is highly recommended but I am not versed in that seat.)
There are combination seats that can keep a child harnessed for a very long time - upwards of age 6. Check out Car Seats for the Littles on Facebook (they also have a webpage if you're not on Facebook) - they are such a great resource and can help you find seats that work for your childs height/weight as well as your budget.
We have the Britax Frontier 85 for my oldest, who is 8yrs and 54lbs. You have to be a minimum of 2yrs and 25lbs to use this seat. Harnessed it will hold a child up to 85lbs. Using the seatbelt it will hold a child up to 120lbs. In CA the law is that a child MUST be in a car seat until they are 4ft 9in. tall. My 8yr is barely 4ft.
We also have the Recaro ProSport for D who is 3.5yrs and 31lbs. You have to be a minimum of 20lbs to use this seat. Harnessed it will hold a child up to 65lbs. Using the seatbelt it will hold a child up to 120lbs. We chose this seat for D instead of getting another Britax because D is SOOOOOOOO small. He needed the extra padding and support.
Your child is old enough and weighs enough for just about every harness-to-booster combo seat on the market. Do you have a store near you that specializes in car seats? Possibly a small boutique? I suggest you go look at them to compare their features and let your child sit in them to see which fits him best.
I really appreciate NOT having to re-teather the harness when the child grows (Britax and Recaro both offer the ability to simply unlatch and pull UP on the seat to adjust the shoulder height of the harness!); cup holders are a MUST have; and LATCH plus ease of installation is key for me. Good luck in your search!
