Moving out of infant carseat

OK so my 4 mo old is incredibly long. He is 16 pounds and 27 in long.
His feet are almost at the end of the carrier.
When did you or will you move to a regular car seat?

Re: Moving out of infant carseat

  • I went right for a convertible car seat since I knew there was a good chance of her being tall and it would save money.
  • Loading the player...
  • I plan on keeping LO in it until she reaches the weight/height limit.  However, it also says if her head is less than 1 inch from the top it is time to move her.  So, whatever comes first.

  • I already had switched my LO to a convertible because he was getting heavy but then I put him back in the infant carrier because the snow was making it a pain to get 2 kids out of seats and get one into the stroller.  I will keep him in it until he can sit up a little better then I can put him in a cart and highchair.  But baby should for sure be out when they reach the height limit or when their head is 1 inch from the top like PP said.

  • My baby is getting heavy and long as well.. not sure about length (but he was in the 95 percentile in Oct), but he's 17 lbs now.  He'll outgrow the length limits on his seat sooner than later.  I'm still going to keep using the infant seat for now but we will be getting a convertible seat pretty soon.  It's hard to lug him very far in the infant carrier.. just too heavy.

  • My carseat has a weight limit of 30 pounds and height limit of 32" and I plan on keeping him in it until then.
  • I have a car seat hater over here. DD screams as soon as I set her in it. I was curious if a different car seat would help. Like switching to a convertible rather than infant? Any thoughts?

Try it. Some kids do better in a convertible because they sit a little more upright.

  • When he can sit in the cart at Target.  I'm being serious.  I hate lugging the infant seat around.

  • When winter is over and the bucket is no longer convienant.

  • We went straight for the convertible, too. I've never used the infant seat, but that's just a personal choice. I'd say so long as your lo still fits, stay?

  • DD hates the car seat so much we just bought another infant seat yesterday. Went from uppa baby to peg prego, it seams way more comfy but worried I just wasted my $. I don't even know what a convertible is? What's the difference?

A convertible seat rear faces and also forward faces. It is the next step after the infant bucket seat. If you bought another infant seat to replace an infant seat you probably did waste money. A convertible seat has a higher weight and height limit than a bucket seat so it lasts longer. Typically if you spend more money on it, it will have more bells and whistles and be more comfortable.

Anyone here who thinks they have a long time in their infant seat because the weight limit is 30 or more pounds.. not likely! Infants outgrow the height limit (or when their head is 1" from the top of the shell, whichever comes first) well before the weight limit.  Then you'll have to move up to a convertible type of seat.  You should rear face them until at least 2 but preferably as long as your seat's limits allow (baby is in a convertible by this point), which may be until 4 yrs if you can!  It's much safer for them to be rear-facing in an accident.

There is a facebook group called "Car Seats for the Littles" that you can request to join.  It has tons of info/resources on car seat safety and different car seats out there.  You can give them your budget, baby's stats, car type, etc and they can recommend good seats for you.  Just a suggestion for people who will be looking to get a new seat soon, or want to double check that their current car seat installation is safe...

(I don't know how to quote, sorry)

My older daughter is on the short side and would still fit in her infant seat at 22 months old. It was a Snugride 32 and the height limit was 32 inches. Sometimes she would fall asleep and we would bring her in store in the car seat. People would look in the seat, expecting to see a baby, and see a huge toddler lol :P
  • I'm glad I'm not the only one switching to a convertible. DD hates the infant carrier and she's way too heavy to cart around in it already! Has anyone tried/bought the britax marathon??
  • The Marathon typically has a lower height limit. I think the new click tight version lasts longer than the regular ones though because it allows the headrest to be raised for rear facing. In all seriousness, if you are on facebook, ask to join the car seats for the Littles private group and then can recommend a good seat based on baby's size and your price range and you will learn what to stay away from

  • Does "Keyfit 30" mean it's good to 30 inches?? I hadn't realized the number might mean something.
  • Yes 30 inches, unless your child's head is one inch from the top before 30".  Like if they have a long torso instead of legs.

  • Glad to see lots of good car seat safety advice in this thread already. I'm also team convertible once DS can sit unsupported. Carrying his infant seat from the house to the car already hurts my arms/wrists but it's definitely convenient in the winter. DD liked the convertible seat better and didn't scream quite as much after we made the switch for her. If DS goes back to crazy car seat screamer we might switch at that point.
