TTC After a Loss

AW: What's up with this pain?!

Hi Ladies,

I'm a little lost, and looking for anyone who might be able to share experiences with pain around O after d&e or d&c.

So I had my d&e back in May. I have seen three separate doctors since then and to all of them I have mentioned that since my d&e, I have been experiencing intense pelvic pain after Oing. Each doctor (including my RE) has said "Oh sounds like just mid-cycle pain". I am a little skeptical of this, as prior to my d&e, the only time I had pain was when I had a cyst rupture. I called my RE to review my mid-cycle ultrasound that measured my follies to double check that I had no cysts, and he said he only found one dominant follicle and that was it. I am concerned about the possibility of Asherman's as my last two ultrasounds (one in October and one in December) have found that my lining has been thinner than normal and I had one super light AF in late October paired with my intense O pain. I don't, however, seem to have any pain during AF.  My RE has told me he wants to do an HSG because all of my bw came back within the normal range, but he seems really reluctant to schedule it? It's pretty frustrating. Anyway...looking for any advice or similar experiences because everyone seems to tell me the pain that wakes me up in the night 2 to 3 days after O is "mittelschmerz".

Here are some goodies for listening.

Re: AW: What's up with this pain?!

  • I do get pretty intense pain on one side or the other at or around O, not every cycle but some worse than others. Years ago, before I thought to tie it to my cycles in any way, I actually took myself to the ER because the pain was so bad one day, I had an ultrasound and that's when my doctor first explained to me that I was likely experiencing O pain. From then on, I would notice I'd have some pain almost every cycle around the midpoint, not always bad, sometimes no more than a twinge, sometimes almost double-me-over or keep-me-awake-half-the-night pain. I never used to have this when I was younger, but seemed to notice it getting worse as I've gotten older. Of course I can't tell you whether what you're experiencing is or isn't O pain, only your doctor can confirm or look into things further as needed, but I do think it's well within the realm of possibility.

  • Well I'm glad to hear that I'm not alone. I know that my doctor will have to be the one to tell me for sure if it's O pain or not, hopefully after my HSG I will have more answers. I had never heard from anyone who had bad O pain, as everyone IRL who I talk to says, "Oh that's not right..."

    Thanks for the reply!
  • I'm sorry you're in pain. I have not experienced anything similar, so I know I may be off base with my advice since I don't know what it feels like, but my suggestion would be not to give up on being your own advocate. If you feel like something isn't right, do not tolerate a doctor who doesn't take you seriously or is reluctant with helping- stay on top of them until you feel you're being heard or find someone new to check you out. I don't blame you for wanting answers, especially in a sensitive time after a loss and when you just want to be in less pain. Sorry you're going through this :(

  • Do you get a full flow when AF visits?
  • @NOBB14 thank you! I have been pretty frustrated since the reason I was referred to an RE from my ob/gyn was because of my mid cycle pain and she recommended, after consulting with him, doing the HSG!

@PinkCamino in October it was definitely not full flow, and in November it was really heavy flow for one day and then super light after that. But up until then my AF had been super heavy after the procedure, so it was a sudden change.

I had Ashermans and my symptoms weren't associated with O. My major symptom was no AF with clear charts showing that I was Oing and not bleed. My periods were painful in the sense that my body through it was shedding a lining but the scar tissue that had formed was preventing any of it from getting out.

  • I'm also one of those "lucky ones" who gets O pains, sometimes to the point where I have to literally stop and clutch my stomach while I'm bent in half, literally. Other months, not so bad, but I always know when I'm O'ing for sure. Cycles and "the norm" can definitely change after a m/c. However, it's not a bad idea to get any unusual pain checked out. FX it's nothing =)

Thank you for sharing your experience with Asherman's. I am trying not to google it, because Dr. Google freaks me out too much, and once my ob/gyn brought it up as a possibility it's always been in the back of my mind. I also have often been thinking to myself at what point can I stop attributing weird cycle stuff to my loss...my guess is probably never!

I also experience Mittleschmerz. It started after my first loss. Then, I was on BC for many years, so it was gone. It just came back during my second cycle post loss this time. I had to sit down and rock myself because of the pain.

I hope that is all that it is for you, too. I agree with PP, get it checked out.
