Re: kegcrc

  • Can you ever hear puke coming up but never out? Not trying to hijack this thread but my LO has "silent reflux". No actual spit up but the milk and acid is still rising up from her stomach and going back down. Burns them the same :(

  • Hmmm...I'm not sure, but that would make sense as well....I guess I'm just looking for answers for the constant crying, may not be reflux, maybe just colic?

  • Hard to say. I didn't realize it was reflux until I started to pay attention. The wet burps, she blows bubbles (which I learned are gas bubbles from her tummy), and crying after eating are all signs that we have over here.

  • I was about to post a similar question to @kegcrc‌ after reading her recent post in the how long baby sleeps thread. Thanks for asking.

I am almost convinced my LO has silent reflux. I've been closely watching her when she appears to be crying in pain, and I've observed her making a regurgitating sound almost every time, then a wet swallow sound, followed by wincing and painful crying. Before observing closely, I thought it was gas/colick because it tends to be worse in the evenings. Today she was restless most of the day and hasn't napped for longer than 20 minutes...and even those 20 minutes were only when she was in my arms.

Her symptoms include regurgitating, random swallowing, hiccups, recently starting coughing (not much but a couple times a day), wheezing/purring while asleep, and recently not sleeping well. We already do most things I've read online about helping reflux symptoms such as sitting her upright during feeding, burping multiple times during each feed, wedge under her mattress (and recently having her sleep in a boppy to further elevate her head), and holding her upright for 20 minutes after each feed.

The following symptoms (or lack thereof) are the ones that throw me off since they're not consistent w reflux. She's gaining weight within normal range (just under an ounce per day), she rarely spits up, and her discomfort is mostly in the evenings for very prolonged periods of time (she doesn't cry in pain during the day or after every feeding).

I had mentioned concern about reflux to her doc once at her 2 week old visit, but her doc brushed it off saying certain amount of reflux is normal in newborns. Unless she's not gaining weight or cries in pain during/after every feeding, it'll just pass in due time. LO is almost 6 weeks old and I still suspect reflux, but the two key symptoms that doc mentioned are not present.

I'm afraid if I call and bring it up again, they'll brush it off again. So especially interested in hearing from others whose LO were diagnosed w reflux. What were LOs symptoms and how did doc determine it. What meds and what's the dosage? Any side effects?

    TIA!!!
  • I'll pop in to say that I thought a few times he's eating like he did during his 3 week growth spurt, but nothing else fit growth spurt. I'm keeping a log of symptoms tonight and calling our ped in the morning to see if they can fit us in before our appointment later this week. He's slept maybe 3 hours total in the last 14 hours and counting...
  • Thank you @kegcrc‌. We have almost all of the same symptoms you mentioned. It did gradually get worse as well. And I totally wrote off the frequent feedings as a growth spurt but I bet it's not. The only symptom you mentioned that she doesn't have is she still sleeps really well as long as she's on my chest or sleeping on her stomach. I know it's not recommended but as soon as she goes on her back she's miserable.
Brooke's appointment is tomorrow and I'm not leaving without a prescription - I want my happy baby back.
