Confused on the Feeding Time

I keep hearing that around 6-8 weeks things will get easier as they will feed less frequently and only for about 10 minutes.  I'm confused by this, because as they get older won't their stomach get larger, therefore feed less frequently, but with longer sessions since their stomach can hold more?

Re: Confused on the Feeding Time

  • My lo is 5 months old and her sessions are 8-12 minutes. Very rarely is a session shorter. She eats about every three hours. I think she started spacing to three hours at about 3.5 months.

  • Agree with PP. As they get older, babies become more efficient at drawing milk from the breast so the sessions get shorter. My LO is 7 weeks and she nurses for about 7-8 minutes on one side and 5 minutes on the second side. She's producing more than enough dirty and wet diapers so I know she's getting enough.
  • Also, I don't think this was mentioned but breastmilk adjusts and is customized to the needs of a growing child. This means the consistency changes, though the total amount consumed may not fluctuate as much.
