It might be made up, but...

.... dear god, if this isn't the so-called 4 month sleep regression, I don't know what is! We went from a LO who had been STTN for over a month, to the last 7 nights straight of multiple wake ups, two MOTN feedings, and difficulty going back down. He had a cold at the start of all this, so I was hoping that was the main cause. But now he's over it and the sleep issues haven't changed.  I read that feeding them in the night can make them start to rely on that night-time calorie intake. But obviously I'm not going to to NOT feed my baby if he's hungry. We are seriously struggling over here from sleep deprivation. I know there have been a few discussions on this before. Just wondering if anyone has any new input/experience/thoughts?

  • No advice, but I could have written your exact post! He's fighting naps as well now when before he was so easy to get to sleep!

  • I feel like I could've written your post.  DS was snotty right around the time he turned 4 months and then got an ear infection.  Ever since then it's been a nightmare with multiple wake ups throughout the night.  Now, the past few nights, he's been staying up late.  He used to fall asleep around 7:30 or 8.  It's almost 9, and he's wide awake.  Last night, I think it was around 11 when he went to sleep...and then was up multiple times.

  • This is us right now too. Shame on me or whatever but I'm feeding DD at pretty much every wake up. I offer the pacifier first and it works ~25% of the time. The other 75% im feeding for the simple fact that that results in us being up just 15-20 mins vs over an hour if we played the pacifier game. Im hoping it passes but in the meantime trying different things one at a time to see if I can unlock the secret. First it was swaddling with one arm out. Then decreasing the temp in the nursery. Then increasing the temp in the nursery. Then changing the "tune" on the sound machine. Tonight will be turning off the night light. So far nothing has made a difference at all.

My finals week starts tomorrow. It's going to be hell.

  • @dvmmomma‌ you are way tougher than I am! I can't imagine trying to do finals in vet school ever, but definitely not with zero sleep! Best of luck- you'll do great!

My LO is just starting to get over the sleep regression but it "flares up" every now and then and he'll throw a fit before he finally falls asleep.
  • I feel like we are mayyyyyybe turning the corner on this! As far as the 4th leap goes, apparently my girl has 9 days left....she started sleeping 7 hr stretches instead of waking all of the time and she is no longer doing the stranger danger stuff! I need some wood to knock on tight about now...I'm super superstitious!
  • Oh dear... if this goes on until the next leap is over, we still have 15 days.  :((
  • DS got a cold a few weeks ago and his sleep at night went to crap. Then out of nowhere he started sttn and now we are back to waking two to three times to feed:'(
  • I totally feel for you :( LO is 20 weeks and thank god has not hit this phase *knock on wood*. Hope it passes quickly. I heard it usually starts around 19 weeks?

  • I am dying over here. Now I'm sick with a head cold and no chance at recovery because I'm pretty sure your body needs rest and/or nutrients to get well, but of which I have neither.
We have tried everything... earlier bedtime (7-8pm), cluster feeding in the evening (he had 10 oz in the 1.5 hours before bed last night!!!), putting down drowsy but awake, consistent bedtime routine, pumping and bottle feeding during the day so I know he's getting enough (since he's become such a distracted nurser)... He adjusts very well to everything... and then behaves EXACTLY the same in the night. On day 10 of sleepless nights and losing my mind.  ~X(
  • @krisleico‌ we are on the same boat, but it's been 4 wks this wk! Started at month 3 and he just turned 4 months last wk.... Kill me plz
  • @Erika101076 Oh my gosh... I will not survive that long.
  • Yup, he's been up ever 2 hrs so far tonight... He either needs to be rocked back to sleep, or to be nurses....I'm exhausted to say the least
  • What is this leap thing you guys are talking about?
  • HUGE improvement last night!! I decided to go back to The Miracle Blanket since he has been so active in his sleep, and I thought that might be waking him up. We haven't swaddled for over a month and have been using Merlin's Magic Sleep Suit instead (which was working great until the last 10 days). E slept from 7:45pm-2:00am, nursed, and then went back down (easily) until 6:45am! It might only be for one night, but I'll take it!!

@Jessica+Penny There is a book called The Wonder Weeks that talks about different "leaps" in development when your baby is likely to be fussy, sleep poorly, etc. You can also get an app for your phone that describes the different leaps and shows when to expect them.

  • Hmm I wonder if I need to try swaddling my LO again? The same thing happened to me @krisleico‌ and after two weeks I got her down to one feed when she got sick again and is now up every 3.5 hours. She needs the extra fluids right now but I'm so scared we are going to have trouble dropping these feeds when she gets better.
