TTC After a Loss

MTHFR question?

Hi all, I am not sure if this is the right board to ask this but we are trying IVF after 2 losses.

I was diagnosed with MTHFR:A222V Homozygote (c677t). My doctor says there is nothing he wants me to do/take about it but I have read mixed messages on google. Does anyone have any info/advice on this?

I want to make sure I do whatever I need to before *hopefully* getting pregnant again to try to prevent another loss.

Thanks!!

Re: MTHFR question?

  • I also take baby aspirin and extra folic acid. Though my doctor did say it was my choice. I like to take it as an extra precaution, it makes me feel better.

I am heterozygous for c677t. The main issue is a mthfr mutation affects the absorption of folate by your body. This can lead to other health issues. How severe depends on your specific diagnosis. As a result, doctors will sometimes recommend taking an active form of folate(as opposed to folic acid-which is a synthetic form), baby aspirin, or additional medication. There are lots of resources online published by doctors that can help lead you in the right direction of specific questions to ask your dr. Also, you can ask your dr if there is a genetics professional provided by your specific test. Many of them have hotlines to help better understand your diagnosis.

Eta: many doctors do not choose to do anything for MTHFR, since it is so common. Talking with your dr or getting a second opinion would help you have peace of mind.
