Leaking Moms... help!

My boobs leak almost constantly all day and night. I am trying to heal severely cracked nipples by keeping them dry but it seems almost impossible. I basically only put my boobs in a nursing bra when i'm sleeping with Bamboobies overnight pads, but it keeps my nipples moist all night which doesn't aid in the healing process. I've tried breast shells to keep the nipple dry but they make me leak even more and end up being filled with milk that spills out all over me. Any tips/tricks for day and night leaking boobs?

"the people" (who told me BF would be easy and pain free) say the leaking will get better over time, but i'm doubting their wisdom.

  • Breast milk is good for cracked nipples. You can also try lanolin or olive/coconut oil. I slather my nips in lanolin and put pads in my bra to soak up the leaks. I don't think there's much you can do about the leaking.

  • Sorry, no advice, but just chiming in to say my boobs are leaking all the time, too! I'm using breast pads to soak it up.
  • When I'm able, if I feel myself start leaking or feel let down happening, I just reach in there and press a finger over my nipple. Stops the leak. For night time, I would say to keep a few changes of pads at your bedside, so when you wake up in the night you can swap them out for a dry pair so you don't get soggy.

Letting the breastmilk get on your nipples and then letting them air dry really can help them heal!

It really does get better over time. It'll happen less frequently, and more predictably so you can plan for it. Eventually it will just stop altogether, except now and then when baby nurses the other side might let down, but that's easy to deal with. I found that it was worst with my first, and then subsequent children I had far fewer issues with leaking.

  • Like PP have said, I put on lanolin, breast shells, and the pads to absorb the milk inside a sleeping bra.  I've definitely woken up with a cup full of milk, but that pads seem to stop it from getting out too badly.

  • I don't know where you live, but there's a cream called "Dr. Jack Newman's Nipple Cream" and it is amazing!  It might just be a Cdn. concoction though, I'm not positive.  It was a lifesaver when I had cracked nipples.  It won't help with the leaking situation, but will help with the cracking situation.  You have to get a prescription for it from your doctor.  It might be worth looking into. I hope you're able to get your hands on it. Good luck!
  • Like PPs have said, breast milk is good for cracked nipples and letting them air dry is best. Keeping them in wet nursing pads for a prolonged time can actually make it harder to heal.

As for leaking, I am a huge leaker! I breastfed my last kiddo for 2 years and 3 months and it never let down lol When I was home I would wear old t-shirts that I didn't mind getting breast milk stains on and would double stuff on burp cloths under my shirt while feeding the little one. That seemed to be when I leaked the most.

Sometimes I did leak when we weren't feeding but I'd just go and change into another shirt. Same for bedtime, I'd just make sure to stuff up with burp cloths. They hold way more than breast pads and way more comfortable than wearing a bra all night.

When I was out and about I'd make sure to pack lots of extra nursing pads. The leaking diminished a little bit after a year but I still leaked. Some women are lucky and it slows down, while others, like in my case, it doesn't hahaha 'Tis the life of a nursing mum :)
  • Thanks for all the advice! I did get the APNO cream. That and warm water salt baths have definitely helped my nipples heal.

@amyg Interesting to hear being moist helps them heal. I always felt like feedings when my nipples are moist hurt more than when they are dry.

@livingthemommylife I guess I need to buy some more burp cloths. I've also thought to try cloth diapers but haven't bought any yet, assuming they are pretty absorbent.

@alibissel I did get a Rx for APNO. Its definitely helped.
