mastitis

So I'm getting over my 3rd bout of mastitis since G has been born. I never had it once with V, and he's still not weaned either. Any prevention tips? Anyone? I don't even know what is causing it... I feed on demand, only 1 side/feeding. I've wondered about my bra, sleep positions, or even babywearing, but I just don't know.

This time around, my temp got as high as 101 last night, 100 this morning, and it kept going down this morning. By the time the Dr's office opened this morning my fever broke and was starting to feel better. Around 2 or 2:30 it started going up again to 99.9 (it was kinda hovering in the 99s sometimes today). I called the office since they closed at 4, and it's a charge to talk to anyone after that. I have an appointment for 9am in the office that's 45min away, which is a pain. And DH will be gone, so I have the boys. But it seems like all my symptoms are pretty much going/gone away. It seems like I can't even cancel the appointment if I wanted to, but it seems silly to go to the Dr now.....

Re: mastitis

  • No underwire bra, don't sleep on your belly, take soy lecithin supplements, drink plenty of water. How is your supply? Over? Do you get clogs?

  • I have an underwire, but it was fitted. I never had a problem before... But obv I am now. I did try to order a non underwire a while ago and got discouraged since my boobs are huge (34H). I don't sleep on my belly, I try to drink my water, and have been taking lecithin for over a moth now. I think I started off with an oversupply, but it's worked itself out now I think. No recurring clogs, and I'm not even sure if it's a clog when I come down with mastitis. There's a tender spot, but nothing hard or lumpy like a clog. The last couple times I think it was after G went a longer stretch at night, and I got engorged for sure. This time I don't even know...
  • I had mastitis twice with M. I'm so sorry, it's just awful. My temp got up to over 103 the first time and I had to go to the ER because it was a Sunday. The second time I caught it sooner because I recognized what was happening, but I was still miserable.

I would absolutely stay away from underwire. Also avoid anything too tight. Massaging in the shower can help you avoid clogs.

For me, lack of sleep plus stress was a big factor. I was an exclusive pumper (not by choice) and once I cut back on a couple pumping sessions and allowed myself to sleep through the night I didn't get mastitis again.

I would still go to the appt if it were me, just to be sure and if nothing else to get more advice to avoid future misery.

    Good luck, hang in there!

Eek! I don't think my temp has ever gone past 102, and it seems to resolve itself after a day or so. Which seems weird.... but I also wondered if stress was a factor too seeing as there have been some hard times since G was born as well.
  • If there's a way for you to ease your stress level, maybe recruit a little help from a family member or friend (?) I would do it. Get as much rest as you can, gosh don't I know that's easier said than done. But your body is going to have little resistance if you are totally sleep deprived and stressed out. I know that is the definition of being a parent, but...do the best you can.

One of two things is happening- either you are starting to develop mastitis and your body is fighting it off and it never fully develops, or you have mastitis and it's bouncing back and forth between acting up and feeling better. I can't tell you which it is, which is why I strongly suggest you go ahead and see your dr. If it is mastitis and you don't get on the antibiotics you could get stuck in a miserable cycle or it could suddenly decide to come at you full force and you'll be waaaaay more miserable.

Unfortunately,I'm already recruiting all of my family and friend to help out with babysitting just so I can teach a few lessons. DH is gone almost all the time right now with coaching. And I realize now this bout came on after several nights of being tag teamed by the boys. They've been doing better the past couple nights tho. Plus, winter break is soon, so DH will actually be home a little bit. We're finally home now after a longer than expected morning. The pharmacy did not have the prescription in stock....
