Pregnant after 35

How much water should I really be drinking??

Good Morning ladies. I hope all is well today.  It's Friday so I'm better than I am most days.   ;)

Question for you. I am not great at drinking water. I'm not even going to sugar coat it. I hate it.  Pre-pregnancy I might have had 1 .. maybe 2 bottles of water a day but probably on average 1.  I'm horrible.  Since I've been pregnant I've been really trying to drink more water. So on a good day I probably have 4 bottles.  On a bad day, 2-3.

I'm asking because last night we ordered chinese and I really did eat too much but in the middle of the night I just felt really crappy. Like my entire stomach just felt crampy and yucky and I just laid there curled up in a bowl for at least a couple of hours.  I was kind of concerned but it didn't really feel like period type cramping.. it was just like all over cramping. High.. low.. everywhere.  (I'm 15 weeks).   At first I thought it was that I just ate too much but do you think that it could be the water?  I'm wondering if I'm dehydrated.

This is my 3rd pregnancy and you'd think I would know these things by now! :)

  • In a ball.. not a bowl. :)

  • Could have just been something you ate. Did you eat shrimp? Cause I did that early on in this pregnancy and was up the whole night with indigestion. It was so bad.

I am also horrible at drinking water or any kind of drinks really. Pre pregnancy...if I get a stomach bug, I always end up in the ER usually due to dehydration. I just don't drink a lot of fluids.
And with this pregnancy, I still cannot force myself to drink water. I usually have been drinking those Walmart brand Crystal Light koolaid packets. I have to have flavor of some kind. But I have been trying to suck down whatever fluid I can to see if that helps with the Braxton Hicks. And it doesn't really. :(

  • I try to buy those big smart waters with the sippy cup like tops. lol  I seem to drink them down a lot faster but I don't always have them.  I try to eat things that make me thirsty too which sounds dumb but I do!  I'll eat peanut butter or something salty and try to finish a couple of bottles. I just don't like water. lol it's hard!

I did not eat shrimp.  I had chicken lo mein so there was nothing in it that typically upsets but stomach.  But I had like half of that container and then some of hubby's food when he got home. lol  The egg roll was ginormous and initially I said ooh can I steal  bite.. he's like you can have that whole thing if you want.. I have more... I said ohh no there's no way I can eat all that. Well apparently there was a way because I ate one bite and another and another and it was gone.  I'm wondering if I just ate way too much.  But my hubby is always yelling at me about drinking water and told me this morning that I'm probably dehydrated.

  • could be a mix of both overeating and dehydration!

  • 8 , 8 oz glasses a day is what they told me in L&D. Dr told me any fluid counts as long as no caffeine ...so I count decaf tea, water, milk, caffeine free pop( sprite, etc)...

  • Really?  So if I'm having a glass of milk in the morning that counts? That makes me feel better because I do drink milk and sometimes I drink cranberry juice or apple juice. I try not to drink too much juice but I also want to stay away from pop and if I don't feel like water it just seems like a better choice.  I wasn't counting milk though.

  • I drank way way way too much caffeine pre-pregnancy so if I didn't do any now I would have major headaches. Probably fall sleep all day long too. :) But that makes me feel a little more reassured.  My husband always gives me a hard time about it but he guzzles water all day. Like one sip is half a bottle for him.  I'm just not that talented.

  • I don't know if there is a right amount or not.  I am similar to you -- not a big water drinker pre-pregnancy.  However starting around where you are I became thirsty all the time.  I'm guessing that on an average day now I probably drink 80 oz or more.  I'm constantly drinking.  If I fall below around 50oz I feel horrible.  Here are some things that work for me: 1)drinking cold water -- I put it in one of those big insulated cups with ice.  The insulation keeps the water+ice cold for hours. 2) I make spritzers with 1/3 lemonade and 2/3 sparkling water. 3) I drink iced tea, tea, some soda and milk too.  If you can have artificial sweeteners (I cannot) I'd also use those crystal light mix-ins for water bottles.
  • I shoot for 100 ounces a day.
  • There is a ton of sugar and sodium in chinese food. I feel like shit anytime I eat it and I'm not pregnant. It's dehydrating too. I get very thirsty after chinese or pizza. Drink up!:)

  • I drink a ton of water to feel my best. It is easier if I have a straw, I dont know why....
I have well water at home, that I didnt care for earlier in pregnancy- so I added flavors to it, MIO and True Lime, etc....
maybe try that? I felt really good everyday that I got 4 liters in. And felt not great when I had not enough water, so yes- I think more water would help you feel better :-)

68oz, or 2 L is plenty, which is what you're getting with four bottles of water.

The digestive system really slows down, and I would guess your Chinese food episode wasn't related to dehydration if you're drinking four bottles.

I had an absolutely awful night with severe pains that made me contemplate seeking medical attention, after eating al dente spaghetti one evening. Since that episode, I have cut out anything that is very hard to digest (turns out carbs and esp. yeasty breads can cause difficulties, while protein is much easier on the system).

In the course of research, I found out spaghetti in particular can be hard to stomach: https://www.whattoexpect.com/blogs/babiesonthebraintoddlerontheloose/could-gas-during-pregnancy-really-be-that-painful-
I'm not sure if your Chinese food had noodles, but if there was a hard-to-digest starch involved, that would be my first guess. Rice is normally very easy to process, but I guess could be a problem if undercooked.

Good luck, and keep up the water, but also try smaller meals.
  • Yep. Lo mein is soft noodles, so she probably had that same discomfort as caused by the spaghetti. ... I had a few issues with different foods, so I just keep gas-x and phazyme in the house. If it starts hurting like that, I dose up.
I thought I was going to have to go to the hospital after pigging out on green beans with butter one 4th of July. Seriously walking it off helped a bit, but.... now I have gas-x!

  • Seconding the Gas-X. It's now always in my purse, along with Colace, even though I try not to use either more than 1-2 times a week.
  • Any liquid counts. You don't just need to drink WATER, specifically. Second, I am pretty darn sure that you just had some slightly off Chinese and got stomach cramps from it. Most likely completed unrelated to your liquid intake.

  • I am drinking 8 to 10 16 oz. glasses of water a day. I just commented yesterday that at the rate I am drinking water I will be the 8th largest body of water by the time this little guy arrives. I have a hard time drinking water as well. I have just experimented with things until I have found combos that work. Currently it is ice cold with a bunch of ice cubes, real lemon juice to the point it is sour, and a straw to drink out of. Have you tried fruit/veggie infusions in your water? Sometimes that helps. Some good fruits and veggies to try are lemons & cucumber, raspberries, strawberries, and blueberries. Sometimes I will also throw in a flavored carbonated water just to mix it up a little. Water can be blah.
