Stink help- again sorry Twins in CD

edited December 2014 in Cloth Diapering
I know this gets asked a lot but I'm hoping someone can help with my stink problems. I don't think it's ammonia per say but the diapers just smell bad. Even when I open a wash after it has run I can smell it and it's especially bad in their overnight diapers as soon as they pee. I'll try to list everything but ask questions if you have them.

I have 8 month old twins. Wash every other day, about 40 diapers. Mostly pockets (bg and blueberry mainly) with a mix of me and bamboo inserts and 4 fitteds for ON. Wash with regular tide in a front loader. Regular water (not hard or soft). Rinse and spin first with warm water. All water rinses out. Then Hot wash with 2 extra rinses. Tide up to line 1.

Do you think too little detergent? I was so afraid of detergent build up but now I wonder if it's not enough for 40-50 diapers. Thanks for any advice!

  • My initial thoughts -- You are washing twice the diapers that those of us with one baby do EOD, so it would make sense that you need more detergent.

I haven't used Tide on my diapers but I think a few people here with regular to moderately hard water use either to line 1 or 1.5 to wash an EOD load for one child. Maybe try going to line 2 and see if you notice a difference?

Also, try soaking your ON diapers in hot water once they come off in the morning. Once the water is cool (or just when you have time to come back to it, wring them out and add them to your diaper pail.

Finally -- try to make sure that your detergent has at least 45 minutes with the dirty diapers before rinsing out. If your Normal cycle isn't long enough, maybe you have a Heavy Duty cycle that would work?

  • When you say fit that many what do you mean? They certainly fit in there with a good amount of room to agitate I think. Less full than I fill it with clothes and I'm not someone who stuffs my washer. What do other people with two in cloth do?

I will certainly try more detergent and soaking ON diapers. Do you just do that in your sink?

    Thanks all!
  • Sink, bucket, whatever you have.

When I was starting out I was washing in a Whirlpool Duet, and that's what I use when I visit home. I think as far as capacity goes it could handle 49-50 diapers and be less than 2/3 full.

My current washer is tiny and no way can it handle more than 2 dozen.

OP, you might try editing your subject line to include "twins" so that you can get the attention of other moms with twins.
  • She has an FL. FLs can hold a lot more than traditional TLs because no agitator taking up space in the middle.

Not sure how good they are at getting that many diapers clean, though. I think this has been discussed before and it's a YMMV thing.
  • I could fit that many in my washer np. Definitely more detergent, though.

Same. Try line 2... since you're washing twice as many, makes sense.

  • I use Tide and typically wash for one child every 3 days - so 30 diapers maybe. I use more than up to the 1 line. Not quite 2.

Also, I use Grovia Magic Bubbles once every 6 weeks.
