Beauty Question

For the holidays, I want to surprise DH by looking extra fresh. The problem is that my hair started to dry out really badly since the furnace kicked on. I also wanted to try some new more expensive makeup. When I grew up, my mom never taught me to do hair or makeup, and I don't have a lot of girlfriends that can help. As a result, I'm really confused with all the choices. I would appreciate any advice!!!

Do you ladies use any magical hair care tricks that help you not dry out this time of year? I have wavy hair and typically scrunch it every day.

Has anyone ever bought any of the Sephora Favorite kits or tried any of the products in them? They are kind of pricey for what is in my budget right now, but I wanted to splurge to sample products I could use daily. I would hate to spend $75 or $100 and not to use any of them.

Where is the most affordable place to buy the more expensive makeup?

Last question...what is a beauty blender?

I feel like I am so behind with the times. Sorry for bombarding you all with questions and TIA!!

Re: Beauty Question

  • I'm clueless with hair honestly but as far as makeup I only use Makeup Forever foundation. I work with makeup artists all the time and that foundation seems to be a pros favorite. I get it in Sephoras website and use coupon codes and go through ebates. Ends up being around $35 a bottle after discounts and they last forever (makeup "forever" lol)

I second Sephora, or Ulta. They both have a variety of brands for you to choose from. Personally, I love Bare Minerals. I just purchased a bottle of their liquid foundation and think that it's really great. They sell an application brush for it, which I did not buy. I just apply with my hands. Sephora/Ulta also sell eye kits - shadows, liner and mascara and usually instructions. :)
  • For hair, do you wash it every day? That can dry it out so maybe wash less and there are so many awesome hair products out there. If you're just experimenting and starting to try new things, I totally recommend maybe doing something like a birchbox subscription for a few months. It's only $10 and you can customize the profile to your style/hair type/skin type and they'll send you stuff. I've gotten a lot of great hair products that way. As for makeup, I definitely agree that you should go to a counter. I learned so much about makeup in college visiting the MAC counter every weekend. ;) Sephora is great, I love Urban Decay for their eyeshadow pallets.
  • What hair product so you use when you scrunch your hair? My hair is curly and I scrunch it every other day. If you are washing your hair everyday then you are washing away all of the oils that keep it moisturized. Recently, I've changed from using a curly mousse to Garnier Fructise curl cream gel. It leaves my hair softer. I always have to do a spritz of hairspray after using my diffuser to keep the curls in place.
  • I am also not great with hair and makeup. For makeup, I really like Mac's foundation because it is really sheer and looks very natural. I also buy my lipstick with Mac. I have been wearing Clinique for blush and eye shadow. I find the Clinique eye shadow to go on really smooth. If you go to Macy's they have both Clinique and Mac. Have them do a makeup trial to help you pick the products and colors you like.

  • @stephyfaith I have to wash my hair every day. I scrunch my hair with gel and mousse. If I don't wash it every day, the product starts looking like dandruff and my hair looks like I stuck my finger in an electrical socket.

@PSUMomma I'll have to pick that up and try it. I use their gel to scrunch my hair and pantene mousse.

I think I am going to try out that Aussie conditioner also and I'm reading up on Birchbox right now! I hate the cold, so I prefer anything that can be delivered to the house! Thank you everyone for the great suggestions so far.
  • I'm sure if you found the right combo of products you wouldn't need to wash everyday. It really dries out your hair. Dry shampoo is my best friend! There are kinds that work for curly hair and flaky product sounds like you need something else. Hoping you can find something that works for you!
  • @stephyfaith I did end up subscribing to BirchBox. I never heard of them before. Thanks!!!
  • Don't forget your face brush @jemasa33 :) I've been using mine for a week now, along with Neutrogena Naturals cleanser that @biggunsbo recommend and some samples of Clinique potions and my face is feeling about a decade younger already!
  • No beauty suggestions here, but do you have a humidifier in your house? They really help when the house gets so dry with the heat on. Helps with keeping your skin and hair less dry as well. We brought ours out a couple weeks ago and the hours feels so much better.

  • I just don't get it at all! I look in the mirror and I think that I look so cute but as soon as I see pictures from being out and about, I look washed out. My school pictures from work make me look 10 years older.
  • @jemasa33‌ another vote for bare minerals makeup. I like Clinique mascara. Try a tinted moisturizer to not look so washed out. I use it daily in the summer. I like Aveeno's.
  • I am clueless when it comes to make up too.

FFSC I still have and wear the same clinique eye shadow and eye liner I bought for my wedding 7 years ago.

@biggunsbo‌ I got my face brush thingy on Monday and have been using it every day since, I love it. I bought some Olay night cream as well and hate it, feels like my face is burning after I put it on. I think I need to make a trip to sephora or the clinique counter soon!

You looked very nice also. You are by no means short and fat. Jay is a lucky guy!!!
  • @andrew0418  Also, I am trying to start a 30 day challenge with myself to do at least 30 minutes of Just Dance a day. You should do it with me!!!!  I don't really feel like doing it, but I want DH to lose weight so I'm telling him I need someone to do it with. He isn't very motivated either, so it has been rough!
  • When I was fed up with my make up routine I went to ulta. I first wasted some money on benefit products which were ok...I had a benefit rep put it on and all. I went back a month later and decided to consult with Lancôme lady instead. She was super helpful!!!
Not only did she do my make up but she explained and let me watch everything she was doing. She wasn't pushy and let me pick out the products I wanted which were foundation and concealer with a lip color. She matched my skin tone perfectly.
I even went as far as to tell her I tried benefit awhile back and ended up unhappy with it and still had most if the product left. She explained to me that ulta will BUY BACK used product as long as 60% if the product is in tact which it was so my make up cost was next to nothing!!! And I'm still so very happy with the coverage.
Before that I was pretty exclusively a Rimmel user. Still I stick to their mascara.
For you hair try coconut oil. Don't put super close to your roots though if you have a tendency towards an oily scalp.
Also home made natural hair masks are really awesome to use once every few months

I love a coconut oil treatment about once a week. Basically I slather my hair and scalp in it, put it in a bun and wear a shower cap. Leave it like that for a couple of hours and wash it out.
Yes!!! This works like a charm!!

  • @Mamasighs‌ @opheliainwaders‌ coconut oil treatment, on wet or dry hair? I need to do this!

I have also used my exfoliating cleanser twice! I'm going to buy the Olay thing after Christmas! @biggunsbo‌

I need to find a new foundation too. Mine is awful. Thanks for starting this thread @jemasa33‌
  • @atlvol I do it either dry or damp, haven't tried it wet, but I figure if my hair is waterlogged, then it won't absorb as much oil? That said, I don't really know how hair works, so this logic may not make sense.
