Allergies?

Anyone know if babies can have allergies this early? I don't mean milk or other food allergies, more like environmental allergies like to dust, dogs, etc. LO has been sneezing and stuffy pretty much since birth. FI is an allergic hot mess, and I didn't know if this was something that could be genetic.

Re: Allergies?

  • Good question, following! DH is allergic to penicillin and seachlor (idk if I spelled that right) so that'd be nice to know!

  • Ugh. All I need is for her to have allergies towards animals :(
  • A few days ago my allergies started with mountain cedar moving in, and I've noticed DS is a little boogery. Could be it, could be nothing. The high was 72 degrees F so I doubt it's from the chil lol.
  • I asked our pedi about this bc I have horrible allergies and asthma. She told me you won't really know until around 1 yyear and right now baby is just sneezing to clean their airway. DD sneezes a lot but so do I. Pedi said allergies are definitely genetic.
  • Noooooooooo!!

  • Yes, they can have allergies. A pediatrician who tells you they can't is relying on outdated info.

  • I am also an allergic hot mess...dust, pollen, cats, many kinds of trees, grass, weeds, mold, etc. I have actually had that skin prick allergy testing, The allergist said LO has a fifty percent chance of having my allergies. Pedi said it won't show up until 1-2 years old most likely. I was a candidate for allergy shots but opted not to do it, because I can manage most of mind through avoidance. I have a couple really bad weeks when our oak trees bloom but otherwise not bad. However, if LO develops any, I would actually consider the shots.
  • Haven't posted in a long while but thought I would share my 2 cents. I know you weren't talking food allergies but just thought I would throw it out there for anyone who may be going through the same thing. My LO has MSPI and silent reflux and was put on Ranitidine and omeprazole since around 6 weeks. After many, many weeks of trial and error and being put on Elecare and then trying different meds we realized they were the problem all along. We had meds compounded allergen free (dyes/fillers) and it was still a fail. He had horrible eczema, crazy stomach cramps, chronic cough and congestion, allergy ring etc. It can be hard to tell esp when they have other issues such as reflux or intolerances but finally listened to my mommy instincts and took him off PPI. We had been to the ER several times with him as he was having apnea episodes and difficulty breathing, rashes. Had high white blood cell counts and still no one thought it could be meds, not even his GI doctor . Of course, that was my last thought as I would never imagine medicine that is supposed to help him could make him worse off. Turns out he cannot tolerate any PPI

  • He also can only use one brand of gripe water and has sensitivities to lotion, shampoo/ body wash. So, just our experience, but I apparently have one complex kid!

  • @abnelsen22‌ thanks! It has been a very difficult and emotional 3 1/2 months but I am hoping we are starting to turn the corner. My poor guy has been through a lot!

Hopefully no one minds me jumping back in when I can :)

  • thanks @Justine2502‌. I've definitely learned a lot. Allergies are so complex, nothing is ever black and white! Allergies can present themselves as reflux and can also make reflux worse if your LO truly has reflux. No one would listen to me and I swear they thought I was crazy but I didn't care. I refused to believe that it was "normal" for my child to scream and cry in pain 90% of the day and have mysterious rashes and stomach pains and not sleep, ever. The ER would tell us there is definitely something going on, "follow up with GI". It's been incredibly hard but glad I learned now never to just rely on doctors word. If you feel something is wrong, there probably is. Just thought something to keep in mind for other mamas who may be dealing with similar issues :)
