Wwcdbd: baby congestion

calvin has kind of always been a gurgley baby and has had croup a few times. Right now he has this persistent ur thing that just will.not.quit. It doesn't seem to bother him as much during the day (he does have a hacking cough but is mostly untroubled by it) but about 5-6 he turns into a hot mess.

A friend suggested cutting dairy might help relieve his congestion. I am skeptical of the dairy/congestion link for grown ups, but kelly mom does list chronic congestion as a sign of a food intolerance.

What does the cd board think? I know ultimately the way to know is cut dairy and see what happens, but I am really attached to my half and half.

Re: Wwcdbd: baby congestion

  • How old is he? Does he have any other symptoms of dairy intolerance (eczema, green mucousy stool, lots of gas)?

  • He is about to be 8 months. No other symptoms that I've noticed. Not really even baby acne. Unless gigantism is a symptom.

  • We were there a couple weeks ago and they basically just said his lungs sounded clear so to just use the humidifier blah blah blah. But it just goes on and on.

  • I know they have it at Harris teeter. I was sure they would at Walmart, too. I looked and looked. They did have like afrin but not the little noses stuff.

  • Also I shot breastmilk up his nose with an oral syringe and sucked t out and he seems way less wheezy. So maybe that's worth it even thought it makes him tremendously angry.

Hang in there! Cutting out dairy and soy is really hard for me too, but the difference is worth it for L's better behavior and diapers. I'm making do with homemade almond milk mochas/cocoas and decided this week that even the non-dairy coffee creamers need to be cut out for just a cup of drip coffee so I sympathize your cutting out of half&half. Just as a heads up, dairy is in a lot of breads/pastries too. We found that out the hard way :(

It took me a month to find some (recently moved, new stores) it's been hell.
I had one bottle of saline spray gifted from BRU but ordered more from target.com. I don't know why they don't carry it in store.
  • Yeah my sister went dairy free for her first baby so I know some of the tricks. It's mostly only occasional other than half and half and butter, so hopefully it won't be too bad! Maybe I'll get some chocolate almond milk to ease the blow ;)

  • Almond milk or coconut milk? Or something else? And is homemade almond milk worth it?

LOL sorry, I'm not that domestic. I meant I use store bought almond milk to make a non-dairy cocoa mix with baking cocoa and sugar. I personally don't like coconut milk, but I picked up coconut milk yogurt today. My IRL MSPI friend said the non-dairy butter from Sprouts is decent.

ETA no eggnog lattes is my bah humbug but then I look @ L and realize it's only for this year...
  • I was just asking in general.

  • P is sensitive to nuts too so I use coconut. But I decoded with E (who was fine with nuts) that coconut milk (from a can) is by far the creamiest and best sub for coffee. For other stuff, almond was fine back then.

  • I give my kids coconut/goats milk post formula. So I vote coconut.

Did you look in the adult section? I couldn't find it with any of the kids stuff (kids meds, or kids cold meds) and it wasn't with the adult nasal spray.. It was with the adult cold /cough stuff. And the only reason I saw it was because I got to go out with zero kids. And wander.
I hadn't but good to know. Thanks!
