High-Risk Pregnancy

Short cervix

Hi!

I am considered a high risk pregnancy, my son was born at 34 weeks. This is my second pregnancy and my doctor has had me on weekly shots of progesterone since 17 weeks as well as cervical measurements every two 2 weeks. Today I am 31 weeks and was told my cervix has shortened to 2.0 needless to say I'm an very worried about another premature delivery. My doctor has sent in a swab to test and see if I am at risk to deliver in the next 2 weeks. I'm wondering if anyone has gone through something similar and what was done in your situation. I get the results tomorrow morning and am worried sick :(

Thanks!

Re: Short cervix

  • Hey there I have a bit if similar situation I went in for my routine 20 week ultrasound and they found that my cervix was 3cm, and opening. They put in a cerclage and had me stay in the hospital for a month, I was discharged a week ago and am now 26 week pregnant! I know that doesn't give you much for answers but I kind of know what your going through. Stay positive :) all will be well!

  • I am in the EXACT same boat. DD was born at 34 weeks. Went in for 21 week cervical check and cervix was 2.7. They out in cerclage that day and I started progesterone suppositories. Last week my cervix was down to 1.7 and they did the swab which was negative so that is good but I'm almost 32 weeks and getting more and more BH contractions and am very nervous. FX for both our LOs to stay put!!

  • I'm hr due to type 1 diabetes but dd was born at 33w so I also get progesterone shots. Due to increased BH contractions, my Ob did ther fetal fibronectin test for preterm labor on Monday. And it came back positive. She did tell me it is more accurate when it is negative... So I am just keeping my fingers crossed and taking it easy. I've been taken out of work so I can rest and not stress about my job.

  • I'm in the same boat. I am 25w 6d and found out a week ago that my cervix is 2.2cm and funneling.

So they've out me on strict bed rest and started me in progesterone supplements until I can see a specialist on dec 10 to see what the extent of the issue is, and give me a more extended view of my treatment plan.

I've read around a lot, and there have been moms everywhere that have the same issue we do and it seems that bed rest and sometimes medication helps a lot. MANY (the majority actually) of the mommies I've talked to have ended up holding out til 32-40 weeks!

I know that it's scary (as I type from my bed) but as long as you follow the directions, I bet it will turn out okay. :)

    Hugs!
  • I'm going through a similar situation. I am 31 and 2 days right now and in hospital bed rest today as my cervix shrunk to 11mm from 2.8cm last week. Had fibrocontin (sp?) test come back positive. And have had contractions every day for awhile that come and go, sometimes consistent for a couple hours.

They have me on iv fluids, progesterone and have given me steroid shots to help babies lungs. Hoping she stays put for longer and specialist said all I can do is rest as much as possible. She is breech so it will most likely be a c- section for me.

Nothing like my last pregnancy but I only delirvered my first 13 months ago and doc said that is probably why cervix is softer.

Hang in there and rest as much as possible!
  • Thank you so much ladies! It makes me feel less anxious knowing that others are experiencing the same and remaining positive during this trying time. Best of luck to all of you and I wish you all healthy happy babies!
  • At 30 weeks, my swab test came back negative but my cervix had shortened to 1.0 (from 2.0 the previous week). Because of that drastic change, They sent me to labor and delivery right after the appt where they realized I was having contractions that I didn't feel. Two steroid shots, magnesium drip, and procardia tablets stopped the contractions and, with hospital bed rest, I made it another two weeks. I ended up delivering my twins because of preeclampsia, not the shortening cervix, ironically.

No advice, but wanted to wish you luck!
    Thank you!
  • Hi,

FIrst of all wishing you good luck.   I have a unicornuate uterus, which often correlates with incompetent cervix.   They started doing cervical measuring since 16 wks.   I know many women having pre-term labor is due to incompetent cervix as they don't normally test for this is a typical pregnancy.  Being super high-risk already, they knew to do so.   Well from my bi-weekly and now weekly testings I can tell you it can also lengthen.  I once almost got down to the treatment zone (progestrone suppositories) but still had just 4 mm to go.   Amazingly I have started to lengthen again.  I am back at 3.2 cm.   No funneling.   I am only 25w, 2d today.

When I started this journey, I was expecting cerclage and bed rest.  Well after meeting with perinatalogist they explain they don't do that anymore can it can be harmful.  I saw some research to back this up but it's scary for me as many other UU women (from internet support groups) have that treatment.   If I need treatment it will be the progesterone and then a pessary - a device to support the pelvic floor.

So I just wanted to offer you hope, that maybe your body will reverse like mine has.  I feel like it's been a see saw.   I just keep telling the baby he/she is not done cooking yet and needs to stay in.   I also do daily reiki treatments on me and the nugget to support the pregnancy holistically.

Thank you so much for sharing your experience. It means so much to know that you are not alone when going through such a scary time. I am currently on weekly shots of progesterone and have another cervical length sonogram next week. I'll update you on my situation.
Best of luck to you as well!

Best of luck to you two as well. It feels overwhelming and you want the best for your munchkin. Try not to stress too much and follow your doctors orders. I hope you make it to full term and have a healthy baby! Xo!
  • Update:

I had my last cervical scan yesterday and it's shortened a bit to 1.89
But my main concern is that my FFn came back positive :( I had my 1st round of steriod shots for the baby's lungs yesterday and will have my second shot today. I feel like a ticking time bomb and that I will go into labor at any time! I am 33 weeks and 1 day. Has anyone had a positive FFN and gone into labor within the 2 weeks following the test? I am also continuing my shots of progesterone.

    Thanks!
  • I am 33 weeks and 4 days and had a positive FFN at 31 weeks and 2 days...had steroid shots, daily progesterone and bed rest...having random contractions but no labour yet and doc said cervix was much better on my last ultrasound a couple days ago. So I've made it past the 2 weeks with the help of my doctors. My doctor said the test is really unpredictable.
