Update on DD

I can't remember if I mentioned she went back to the ER again yesterday as it happened again.

She's terrified to go potty. Not so much because she is in pain (doesn't appear to have pain) but because Wednesday and Thursday, when she pooped, we suddenly rushed her off to the hospital as she prolapsed.

She was in pain this morning from holding it in but too scared to go. She finally decided she would try to go in a diaper. No prolapse this time!! So thankful. Got it to the hospital lab and rushed to make the appointment in time (different directions and I live rurally).

At this point, nothing we can do until the lab results come in. We are seeing the specialist on Thursday at 1pm. It was the soonest we could get in. But this specialist talked with the ER doctor over the phone yesterday and said is sounds more like a mucusal prolapse (aka partial rectal prolapse or false prolapse). It is semi-common in other parts of the world, especially in kids 2-4yrs. Usually after constipation or diarrhea. She had had an intestinal bug a few weeks ago so it may have weakened the muscles then.

It could take a month for it to fully resolve itself. As long as when it happens, it goes back in within an hour, there isn't much to be concerned about. And since her's is usually back in in 20 minutes, there's really nothing to be done. The appt with the specialist is more a consultation/baseline visit so that if it doesn't resolve itself or if the lab results do have something odd in them, we are already in the system there.

I'm still scared. But I'm calmer. It helps that she didn't have another one today (yet). She will probably regress back to diapers for awhile and that's okay. I mean, it's frustrating as she was finally trained, but understandable.

  • I'm glad you updated us. I hope they get her lab results back soon so you can have some more answers. I really hope though that it doesn't happen again. You are definitely in my thoughts. Hang in there!

  • Poor, sweet thing! I hope it resolves on its own quickly!
  • Some of the lab results take 72 hours. I'm on pins and needles until then.

She had two more prolapses yesterday afternoon/evening with a lot of loose stool, basically diarrhea. One event was so explosive, it shook her whole little body. :(

Right now, the hardest part is because of the prolapse, she thinks she still has to poop so we have to physically remove her from the potty, cover the prolapse with a wippie, and put a diaper on her. During which she is screaming the entire time. "I'm not done pooping!!" "Don't check me!!" It's really easier on everyone when she poops in her sleep. Then body just does it's thing, she doesn't keep want to push, etc.

Life is very stressful right now. And of course, even on a modified BRAT diet, she doesn't like half the things she is allowed to eat. Mad she can't have milk or cheese.

I did call the on-call pediatric specialist last night because it was coming out 3/4" instead of the normal 1/2". He was very calm and reassuring. He said something like, "I know as a mom it is terrifying and seems like a big deal but we sometimes see these at 6". As long as it is under an inch, it's okay. She probably felt like she had some more poop and just pushed a little. It's okay. But if you are still worried Monday, call and we'll try to get you an earlier appointment. I am on call all weekend so feel free to call me if you need to."

He is not the specialist we are seeing, just one in the same practice. But, even though I'm still scared beyond all reasonable belief, talking directly to a specialist helped me. I can't hardly sleep. I get a few hours of good sleep then sometime after 1am or so, I start waking up every hour or so. About 5am, I barely sleep anymore until I get up at 6:30.

Update: She has completely regressed to diapers other than peeing on the potty maybe once a day. Which is totally, 100% fine and to be expected. She tends to either poop in her sleep right now or standing up. When she sleeps, she doesn't try to keep pushing. And when she's standing, she doesn't seem to prolapse. The minute she tries to do it on the potty, she does.

Before she regressed, she was terrified to potty so she was holding it in, causing herself a tummy ache. So at least with the regression, things are a little less stressful.

But no other symptoms of anything else still, other than looking tired all the time. I'm hoping that that is just me being too hyper aware. She is herself most the time. She's off today but that might be the storm we are getting. She reacts greatly to changing weather.

Diet is interesting. She is on the modified bland diet until Thursday so I've been having to get very creative with the 10-12 things she can eat. :/ No dairy besides yogurt. I did pick up some rice milk so we are going to try that today.

I'm concerned about the weather. We have a big storm moving in today and not leaving until Thursday night. I have to drive 70 miles on Thursday to get to our appt. If the storm is bad enough, DH will no longer get to go and I will have to do the driving. Not thrilled by that.

  • Good update!!

The doc called. Lab results came back negative!! So, most likely, the intestinal bug she had a few weeks ago weakened the muscles then straining to go eventually caused the prolapse. Which means it should correct itself in time, just as the specialists have been saying.

So incredibly thankful there isn't some underlying big issue. The mucus in the stool is just part of the prolapse. (Which makes her diapers smell extra terrible btw)

  • I'm just seeing this now and am so glad to read the great update above!  Poor baby and poor mama!  What an ordeal this must be for you all.  Hoping the prolapse corrects itself soon and she's back to her usual happy self in no time!

  • Thanks for the update. That is great news! I am glad that you can take a deep breath and know that with time it will get better. Does this mean you don't have to go to the specialist on Thursday? If so, that will be nice since you said it was so far and that a winter storm was moving in.

We're still going. The storm ended up being more rain than snow and warmer than predicted so less ice. So DH doesn't have to go on storm duty and will be going with us. Because it may not correct itself, we still need to see the specialist. Basically so we are in the system already if she has to have surgery in a couple months. Plus, he knows way more about this than the ER docs. while he talked with them over the phone, this way he can examine her. I took a pic of the prolapse so that he can see what is happening. The family doc suggested I do that since DD only does it when she poops.

  • @countrygrl5533 Good luck at the doctor, and be safe in your travels! Know that you and your dd are in my thoughts and prayers. It sounds like a good thing to still have the specialist check her out. Please let us know how it goes.

  • Build a bear is one of our Mall stops too.. sometimes its for a big bear sometimes we pick up a small one.. the small ones run about $5 sometimes  so we let him choose and if he can't choose .. it's still only $10  for some new friends.

We rarely buy the outfits.. I think we only have 3.. a cop, jack sparrow outfit and a UT longhorns football kit...

Glad the lil lady is doing better..I know how much the modified diet thing can suck, we have a picky eater at the best of times and having to cut out 75% of his diet to figure out if they were also causing a secondary reaction has truly sucked.  Luckily our rash is finally almost run it's course after a second flare up at the original site.   almost 7 week it has taken ..I'm so over rashes lol.

Now you can relax and enjoy Christmas without stressing  :)
