When do you guys think it's best to start a baby registry? DH and I went to scare ourselves a bit with the cost of first-time pregnancy "must-haves" and I feel like we should start. Have any of you our there started yet? Where?
Here's a tip that someone suggested to me during my first pregnancy. Start stocking wipes, and diapers now. Each time you go to the store, buy a pack (big or small). Gradually pick up staggered sizes from newborn to size 2. This was such awesome advice. We didn't buy diapers after our son was born for at least 6 months.
Truthfully I did a target one online, because I wanted to have a base! I only have the big things, because well obviously we aren't far enough along for us to really do it, but I couldn't help doing one and keeping it private!:) it's really just for me!

This...
for those who don't already know, a newborn will go through approximately 8-12 diapers a day,
8-12 A DAY. That means that those medium sized boxes will be empty in a week. Do't be afraid to register for diapers either, people like giving practical gifts too; especially your friends like already have kids and know the value of a diaper! I just counted mine and although I look like a crazy person, I have 850 size one diapers (always a deal hunter!) and I expect to go through them in 3-4 months.
I've also started to stock pile size 2 and 3, most of the stores around me will exchange diapers for another size as long as they carry the same quantity (I think this is the case for most places), so don't feel bad buying sizes you're unsure you'll need.
There are always big items to register for that can be gender neutral especially if you plan to have more children. Diapers are great to register for as well as some simple items like plain onesies, solid pants, sleep and plays. Not everything has to be gender specific. That being said, I would register around 20 weeks, gives you time to research anything, plan the nursery if you're doing one and fine tune it before the shower.
You can really start a registry anytime you'd like. They notify you as items become unavailable or what not. I think I started pretty early with my first and condensed it down nicely by the time it was baby shower time.
I don't think I'd buy diapers in bulk now. You do not know what type of diapers will work for your LO before they've worn them. My DS has eczema and what worked perfectly for DD does not work for him.

My DD ended up reacting to Huggies and I was able to exchange them all, even without a receipt.

I started one on Amazon already but I'll keep it private until I have a shower date or someone asks. Right now it's mostly a way for me to save things on a list when I see something I'd like so I don't forget. I'll probably also start one at Babies R Us at 5 or 6 months. In the meantime I'm building up our diaper stash (we're doing cloth) by getting one or two every couple weeks and planning to buy some things here and there when we see a good sale, mostly more expensive or harder to find stuff that we're unlikely to get at a shower. I've also been thinking about setting aside some money in a sock drawer for clothes after the baby's born...neutral clothes are hard to find bordering on nonexistent (seriously why does everything have to have a truck or a ruffle?) and we aren't finding out the sex ahead of time so we probably won't get nearly as many clothes before the birth as people who know.

I'm sure you can exchange them. But I don't see how buying them and then possibly needing to worry about exchanging (and not all stores carry all brands) would be easier than just buying as you go. Just pointing that out to others.
I'm a neat freak.. And I know this child will be spoiled by both sides sooo I created one already cause everyone on my bfs side is saying what they want to get (they are cray cray) but I don't want to find out what I'm having and I'm picky.... but I started one with baby list! They tell me when the price on something changes you can have categories and they good thing is it's like a Pinterest for a baby registries, it's awesome you can add a note a prince and "pin" stuff from anywhere.. So it's like a central one
Get the Baby Bargains book. Figuring out what you need and which specific brand/model will work best takes awhile and is a pretty intimidating job. But Baby Bargains is great for helping layout what you need and recommends specific versions based on price points.
I also agree that it's not necessary to start stocking diapers and wipes now unless you have the space to store them. Or unless you find a really great deal on them. Www.babycheapskate.com has some great info about who has great deals on diapers and wipes each week. It also has a chart with an estimate of how many diapers of each size you need.
I don't think there is anything wrong with starting to try to decide on major items like car seats, cribs, etc before you find out if baby is a boy or girl. If you are planning on having more kids, you will want those items gender neutral so you can reuse them. So it doesn't hurt to start looking early.

I disagree with stocking up on diapers. Different people prefer different diapers and it took me 3 months to fimd diapers that didn't cause leaks or give DS rashes. Once I found a kind I liked I set up amazon auto delivery for exactly the amount I need every month. Way cheaper than stores and I don't waste space in my home with boxes of diapers everywhere. Be careful about buying tons of diapers in advance. I still have 3 boxes of huggies size 1/2 DS never wore because huggies always leaked on us and I got tired of all the gross stained clothes.

Because you can buy them on sale and get them cheaper. And even when you exchange them you don't need a receipt so they will exchange straight across regardless of what you paid. I always keep my eye out on target because they will do sales, and then I'll use target coupons, manufacturers coupons plus my red card and get them for next to nothing. Buying as you go you can't always do that. That's why you see couponers with stockpiles.

As pps have stated, most stores will exchange them. Its worth a shot rather than leaving them sitting around your house. Otherwise sell them on a swap page or craigslist.

I always buy diapers on sale. It's actually incredibly easy. I buy diapers once a month and have never had an issue. I have been doing it for 4 years straight so I know how sales and coupons work. I am just saying I do not personally see any value in stockpiling diapers. It's very hard to predict sizes and fit and reactions. Yes they can be returned but I don't find that easier.
When my daughter was little we used diapers.com to deliver bulk diapers when we were running low they are amazing because you get your order within a day or two! Love that place, especially in the beginning when you don't feel like running out for them.
I have a private Wishlist on Amazon that I started about a month ago. I figure when the time comes I will make a registry based off of everything I've put on there.
I haven't decided yet if I am just going to do Amazon or do the other stores just for the free goody bags. :-P I'm not expecting anyone to buy off of my registries, as this is my third kid, but I use them as checklists.

Also, make sure to grab a knowledgeable friend if you have one. SO MANY of the "registry must-haves" are just a lot of fluff. You don't need EVERYTHING. It's good to have a BTDT mom to shed like on what is need vs. "would be nice".

@Chasity08 when you say they will let you exchange straight across, how does that work with price differences? Let's say I've stocked up on Pampers and then birthed a Huggies baby. If I didn't keep my receipts, and I brought in a couple packages of Pampers, would they just give me equivalent sizes of Huggies? Or would I have to pay any price difference? And would that price difference take into account current sales, or is it just the usual price of each? Inquiring minds want to know...
Re: Baby Registries
I would start looking into it around 6-ish months or so, earlier if you are high-risk or twins.
Most people won't throw showers for you until around 7 months, so you should have plenty of time!
ETA: Babies R Us was always my favorite. They give you a completion bonus, have just about everything and will price match with Amazon!

With my first I started it after my anatomy scan so probably 22 weeks or so.
I also agree with stocking up on diapers and wipes now, especially when there's a good sale going on!
