Cloth Diapering

I am so new to cloth diapering- few questions in here

hi all
I am currently 10weeks pregnant with my first. I am hoping to cloth diaper. I have done a little bit of research, and lurked a very little bit on this board. Just wondering a few things.

Is it too soon to start building my stash? What would you recommend as the minimum amounts of diapers, inserts, covers, snappis etc to have?

Is there a thread anywhere on here that talks about the pros/cons of various types of CDs? Or links you have found helpful.  (edited to say I am currently watching the video series found in the FAQ)

I'm OK with buying used- is there a better place than Craigslist to look?

Thanks for any advice.

I don't think it's ever to soon to start building your stash. I pretty much had mine complete before I was even pregnant.

How many diapers depends on how often you plan on washing and if you are just going to have a one size stash or do newborn and one size stash. I had enough newborn diapers (prefolds and fitteds with covers) for about 30-36 changes. I had 2 snappis and washed laundry about every 2 days for the newborn phase. Theoretically you'll need less when they are older as they won't be popping and peeing quite as often

When it comes to used diapers I bought a lot from clothdaipertrader.com and spots corner. Some like diaperswappers.com and there is also a swap with my page here on TB and on this board.

  • Thanks ladies. The videos answered a lot.
Is there a way to add cloth diapers to a baby registry?

  • If you plan on using them for more than one child, I'd buy new. Unless it's prefolds, flats, or workhorses. Those can take some serious abuse. Covers and pockets need repairs after 1-2 years of use (elastic replacement and Velcro).

  • I must have been an oddball when pregnant. I didn't buy my first cd until after ds came home from the hospital. Then I only bought 18-24 changes and washed daily. I bought enough OS dipes to wash eod+ though. If you're on Facebook, look for a bst group in your local area. (cloth diapers and/or natural parenting groups good search terms).

  • Also, I feel like due to the recent dearth of Zulily PSAs, we should start a new drinking game for whenever FLCDS gets mentioned. Because that group seriously makes me want to drink.

    I concur......I don't gif but I do miss the drinks. :)

  • Do we really need a reason to drink?

Not really, but it's fun to have a reason to post drinking gifs.

  • Thanks for all your help so far ladies. Is there a place that lists all the cloth diapering acronyms. I learned PUL from the video, but GUC, EUC, BST... I don't know those

  • Also, @iteachkids81, it's not every day that a newbie gets thread-jacked on her very first CD board thread. While in this instance it had nothing to do with anything you said really, I hope that it makes you feel special.

I've been around the knot, nest and bump enough now to know that each board has it's own language and things that bother the regulars. I'm cool with being thread-jacked. Thanks for being so helpful. I definitely plan to hang around and learn as much as I can.
