Children's books.. Need suggestions!

We are looking to get DS a bunch of new books for Christmas. He has become really interested in books lately (instead of the normal constantly running around never stopping he actually wants to sit and read). He has a pretty big library already but mommy is sick of reading the same books. What are your favorite children's books and what books do your kids love?

Re: Children's books.. Need suggestions!

  • My kids love the Skippy Jon Jones series, The Lady Who Swallowed... ( a fly, snow, etc.) The books are rhyming and repetitive so the kids can "predict" the next line.
  • Loading the player...
  • I don't have any suggestions for books as I am a FTM but I have a suggestion on where to find some cheap!  I bought a few books as gifts for my friends and I usually buy them at Marshalls and TJMaxx.  They have a great selection (usually in the kids section and at the front of the store at check out) at cheaper prices!

  • I can't see his age either so I'm winging it. My kids like Duck & Goose (they are for very little kids but all my kids enjoy them), The Diary of a....Fly, or Spider, etc., Pete the Cat. Let me keep thinking.

  • I don't have a ticker/siggy or whatever it's called anyway, I cannot figure it out for the life of me ( I think cause I use an iPad my laptop is broken)! I forgot to mention he's a two year old boy and is obsessed with trucks, trains and any form of transportation. He loves all types of books though not just restricted to trucks etc.
  • Mouse paint, silly sally, To Market To market, If give a mouse a cookie, If you give a moose a muffin, Good night moon, The very hungry caterpillar, Chicka Chicka boom boom.

I have more but I can't remember them right now.
  • My DD LOVES "Llama Llama, Red Pajama" and "King Jack and the Dragon" right now. Have you checked to see if you're eligible for Dolly Parton's Imagination Library program? We enrolled LO at birth and have received a book each month since then! It's totally free (a United Way program). We have lots of books we never would have bought otherwise!

  • DD loves Sandra Boynton books. We have 10-12 (and she's getting more for Christmas!). She also really likes touch and feel books. "If I were a ...." (Lamb, dog, bunny, etc) or "That's not my...." (Horse, mermaid, etc). Those are the ones we have but I'm sure they may have more boy friendly titles if that's what you're looking for. DD will be 2 in January.
  • Pete the Cat, The Monster at the End of this Book, Franklin books.

That's awesome!! I've never heard of that I will definitely look into it. We had DS in a early moments book club but he never even liked any if the little books so after about 6 months we cancelled it.

Dear Zoo was a favorite of both of mine around that age.

I second this! We are also big into the Dr. Seuss books-- Put Me in the Zoo, One Fish Two Fish, The Lorax, etc. We love the Bearenstein Bears Books. Have you heard of "Say Moo"? I watch a three almost four year old and every time we reads it she helps out with the words and sounds. It's a good book! Also, one of my favorites as a kid was Pig Will and Pig Won't. The author, Richard Scarry, has quite a few good ones. We have Busy, Busy Town and Best Word Book Ever by him (they are a bit different, though. I would suggest skimming through one before you decide to by it to make sure it's the type of book you are looking for. Nothing bad! Just a different style).

    Good luck! Books are great!
  • Monster st the end of this book, chika chika boom boom, dr Seuss, duck & goose, biscuit touch books. We love all books!

  • All the Froggy books. Froggy goes to school. Froggy goes to the doctor. Froggy's first sleepover.

My DS is 3 and I think we read about 12 of them and he never got tired of them.

  • I am not sure how old he is because I am on mobile but The Book with No Pictures has been a favorite sound our house with my 3 1/2 year old.

Otherwise for a little younger one - the llama llama books are really fun, Brown bear brown bear, hungry caterpillar and Dr Seuss books are always great.

Also if you work outside the home, Miss you like crazy does a great job of talking through why a parent works instead of staying home and playing with the child all day.

  • Thank you all for the suggestions. Definitely some good ones! We've been reading "thank you god for mommy" "the donkey no one could ride" and "brown bear, brown bear what do you see?" So much I could recite them word for word. So ready for some fresh options
  • Absolutely Little Blue Truck, and Little Blue Truck Leads the Way. We have the Christmas one too, Little Blue Truck's Christmas. DS is obsessed with all of them, but especially Leads The Way.

  • Books by Mo Williams and Doreen Cronin are among my favorites. They don't have the repetition and rhyme but are funny stories that can grow with kids.

    Baby Muffy Due July.8.2015!

  • I second Sandra Boyton books- DS especially loves "Blue Hat, Green Hat" and can "read" it to himself and giggles every page.

I cannot recommend this set enough: Amazing Machines: Truckload of Fun (10-Book Set)- found here: https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/0753461544/ref=mp_s_a_1_2?qid=1418592042&sr=8-2&pi=AC_SY200_QL40

DS is also interested in anything with wheels/engine and has been obsessed with that set of books for over a year. The same three characters are in all 10 books and he has made up little names for them. I give it as a gift to little boys for baby showers or birthdays all the time.
