Possible flu

So I was called to pick LO up from dc today bc she had a temp of 99.9. It went up to 102 and has pretty much stayed around that. There was a verified case of the flu at her dc yesterday. Just wondering if there is value to taking her in? Can she get that tamiflu? I'm currently waiting for a call back from the nurse line so thought I would ask u ladies if you had any experience with this. If anything we would probably take her in the morning since she is falling asleep as we speak.

Re: Possible flu

  • Is tylenol helping the fever?

We just went in and got swabbed for everything and I assume they checked for flu (fever for two days, up to 102 yesterday and early today), but they didn't say anything about flu.  Ended up with an antibiotic shot and anti-bacterial meds.  Hopefully that does the trick.

FWIW, when I called at night they told me just to monitor, but when I called back the next morning they wanted him seen ASAP.  Hope your LO is feeling better!

  • we were at 102 all night and have hovered between 100 and 101 with tylenol all day.  LO has his flu shot.  My guess is teething or sinus infection for us.
  • Man, now that you mention this, I'm going to call back tomorrow morning and make sure they checked for flu... Can you even check for flu??

  • Yeah they can check for flu. As far as I know. Tylenol has taken it from 102 to 101. I'm going to try calling again since I'm tired of waiting and I want to know what we should do in the morning.

  • Are your LOs eating? Hazel is kind of eating but sounds like she is going to spit up everytime she eats. It's sad :( she also isn't eating nearly as much but has had plenty of wet diapers so I figure that's a good sign

  • My DD had the flu when she was 10 months old. They do swab your nose and it is important to take them in. My DD was like 3 days in (DH was swabbed a wk earlier and came back neg so we didn't take her right away. Turns out the quick swab is only accurate 2/3 of the time...awesome) so they didn't offer Tamiflu, but I'm not sure if they would have anyway. Truthfully she handled it better than DH or I, but her fever did get up to 103. We popped her in the bath and with permission from the pedi alternated Tylenol and Motrin. I hope your LO feels better!

  • We've had a virus with an on and off fever here forever it feels like. If tamiflu is going to help it needs to be taken within the first 24 hours. But it can have some pretty icky side effects

  • J is eating just fine, but napping a ton.  I had a virus and fever at 102 all weekend.  I assume he got that, but he's on augmentum for his ear infection.
  • What are the side effects @Rrrrrachel‌ ? I wonder if its worth it

  • The usual stuff I guess. Nausea. The pooping. I guess they don't do it younger than one, anyway?

DS got swabbed today, so I guess that was it.  That's crazy that the accuracy is so bad though!

He's started having diarrhea since we came home from urgent care, but his fever isn't so high anymore.  He had a good 30 minutes where he played like normal, but other than that he's a sad little baby.  Eating has been hit or miss - he had a nursing nap today, but refused the breast at bedtime and I think he was wearing more than he ate at dinner.

Poor baby :( its the worst when they are unhappy and you can't help. GL tonight. I hope tomorrow is better!

  • Hope all your babies feel better! Hazel is not sleeping well at all. She has woken up 3 times now just moaning :( so sad.

I thought I read they give tamiflu to anyone over 2 wks to treat flu and anyone over 1 yr to prevent but I could have read it wrong.

  • I could also not know what I'm talking about with the one year old thing.

I hope whatever everyone else has is shorter lived than the nastiness here! I'm ready to run away from home.

  • So sorry y'all's LOs are sick! Hope they feel better soon.

To answer your question my doctor said to come in if LO has a fever above 100.3.

Poor girl! C has been sick all week- a bad cold turned into an ear infection and was up constantly for 3 nights but it's back to normal now.
To answer your earlier question- C didn't seem to have much of an appetite so i reduced the ounces in her bottles but offered more frequently and that seemed to help.
Hope you and hazel get rest tonight!!!
  • Just to update you all dad took her in and it is the flu. Strain a which is not covered by the vaccine. Fantastic! So now I get to try to find tamiflu for all of us so we don't get it and there is none in the cities, ugh happy Friday!

  • Did y'all's LOs have any other symptoms other than fever ?? My guy just woke up with a 102 fever. I stay at home with him so no day care.. And not other symptoms that I can tell :(
  • Just for a little positive, this years strain is not terrible. My oldest had it and he bounced back within two days without Tamiflu.
  • @Abcollins57‌ I was just about to say she has had 3 doses of tamiflu and already seems almost back to normal today after being super sick yesterday. Phew. Now I just pray the rest of us can avoid it.

@Vjlewis07‌ LO just had a runny nose and the fever and not quite as big an appetite at first. It turned into her being very lethargic, fever went up and she didn't want to eat hardly at all. It happened very fast so you should be able to tell quickly if it is the flu. Just a fever could be something else too

  • Glad to hear that!
  • We just got a call that one of the kids at daycare has the flu....I'm praying it doesn't hit our household.  I'm so sorry to hear about the LOs with it.  We feel awful when we get it, I can't imagine how they feel.
  • @nycgirlkat‌ I hope your LO doesn't get it! Out of 12 kids at hazels daycare 11 got it! They all had it within 2-3 days. It was insane. It was short lived though

  • My DS just tested positive for influenza a yesterday  X_X
He had a GI bug with vomiting & diarrhea last week, no fever at all just had to keep him hydrated with pedialyte. He spiked a fever Weds night of 101.1 along with a nasty cough so we went to the dr yesterday & he has that & an ear infection. He's on Amoxicillin & Tamiflu. Luckily we were able to find it at our pharmacy I was worried I was gonna have to shop around for it.
