Prenatal Massage Will Rock Your World!

Oh boy what a treat. Just got back from my first ever prenatal massage and it was amazeballs! I've been having some back and hip issues, so my OB wrote a prescription for prenatal massage ... it was the best thing ever. Just the ability to lie face down for the first time in months made it all worth it. I did half hour on my lunch break (working next door to a RMT's office is fantastic) and I feel so much better right now. Admittedly, the part where she was working the compression in my hip was a little intense and being mostly naked while I'm feeling my fattest was slightly unnerving, but everything else was great.

Definitely going again next week. I highly recommend it, especially if it's covered by your benefits package! I only wish I'd started going sooner in my pregnancy. Is anyone else going for regular prenatal massages?

  • I was unsure about the pillow at first, because my belly is so huge, but it turned out to be perfectly comfortable. I asked where I could buy one. LOL Apparently they're like $400.

  • I got one today for my birthday! Best decision I've ever made.

  • Hollar...just had my first one too.  Amazballs.  Sadly she only works during my working hours, so I don't know if I'll be able to go again.  DH is going to try and get his wisdom teeth out in January (I'm insisting this happen before baby so I don't have to deal with two demanding/whiny boys  :) )  so maybe whatever day he picks I can drug him up and go again.
  • I really dislike prenatal massage compared to regular. Side line massages aren't my thing. I go to a lot of massages and I miss laying on my stomach *sigh*
  • That's so cool your benefit package covers massages!  I would take full advantage of that.  Been messing around with the idea of prenatal chiropractic services cause of back pain.  So glad you are feeling better!

@alygohome , I wouldn't do one laying on my side. If you have the chance, try to find someone that has a specialty pillow so that you can get one laying on your stomach. The pillow seriously makes ALL the difference.

  • DH mentioned sending me for a prenatal massage but I haven't been into the idea.. I've heard a prenatal massage has to be much softer, right?

I really like a heavy hand and lighter massages usually leave me feeling like I'm still wanting more and honestly kind of pissed. Lol. Like, I want to leave slightly in pain so I feel like a new person the next day.

For those of you like me is a prenatal still as mind blowing? Because I really do want a massage.

  • Had one a week ago! Best. Thing. Ever. I wish I could go every week. I've got serious tailbone pain and man I felt like I could cartwheel and triple back flip out of the massage place.

  • I had a prenatal massage last night that used one of the pillows and unfortunately I could not get comfortable! I was so excited about it too! I'm 30 weeks today, 5'6" BMI of 21 with a normal weight gain and it felt like my belly and boobs were too big  . The whole time I kept thinking I was smashing my baby so I think I was tense the whole time and my feet kept falling asleep. If the belly area was bigger, I could imagine it being more comfortable...or if my belly were smaller!

I'm pretty positive that BMI is not a factor here. It's probably just the 30 week bump. I haven't been able to comfortably modified lay on my stomach for at least 15 weeks. We try to avoid weight conversations for future reference. It only serves to make people feel inadequate in some way.

So did you provide your height and BMI so we could reverse calculate your weight?

Seriously, though, neither detail is relevant to the fact that pregnancy can be uncomfortable, period.

  • I've been getting prenatal massages monthly since the beginning of my 2nd tri, and so look forward to them! I have only done the side massages though because that's what massage envy here offers (which haven't been uncomfortable so far) but now I want to try this pillow you all speak of! :)
  • @unconcentionalatbest I had a massage with my first at about 39 weeks - my water broke the next day!

  • The lady I saw yesterday didn't have a problem with a lot of pressure.  She just avoided pressure-on certain areas, like lower arms.  She said that was out of abundance of caution because of increased blood flow/clots during pregnancy.
  • Wow, I meant in no way shape or form to offend anyone at all or boast. Of course I feel large and uncomfortable and I know and hear from everyone how "big" I look. "Are you having twins?" "Are you sure you're only 30 weeks???" "Have you been checked for gestational diabetes??". I was just trying to give an image for the purpose of giving an idea of my belly size and the use of that pregnancy massage pillow. I was trying to help ppl avoid it if they too felt the same way. Was just sharing an experience so others wouldn't have felt the same discomfort I did.

I'm glad we are all here for each other and supporting each other in our pregnancy. Thanks guys..
  • I HATED my side-lying prenatal massage.  It ticked me off as it felt like a waste of money.  She was too timid even after I kept asking for firmer pressure.

  • Timely topic - Some girlfriends took me out just today for a massage, mani/pedi, and lunch to celebrate baby #4 :) I actually was sortof dreading the massage- just the touchiness and the nakedness- but it was wonderful. I was propped up and over inside a fuzzy warming blanket and so I was all covered up and cozy the whole time. Mainly the masseuse concentrated on my scalp, neck, shoulders, arms, hands, feet (can't have anyone touch legs bc of varicose veins), and somewhat down my back (she sortof reached under me and pulled??). It definitely wasn't like anything I was expecting, and I'm super intrigued by the preg pillow, but it was perfect for me bc I loved being all wrapped up!
  • I was a MT and know I completely understand why all former pregos were so happy. I've been getting prenatal massage every 3 -2 weeks. It is honestly the best wellness I do for baby and me. I love the body cushions. It feels amazing to lay on the body cushions and take the pressure off the low back. It has helped me with muscle tension and relaxation. Baby loves it too.
  • I had a sideline massage last week. Honestly I only got it because my husband got me a gift card for it my LAST pregnancy and I never used it. I must be one of the few who really hated it. Maybe it was just the therapist doing it, but I wanted it to be harder pressure but she said they weren't allowed to :(
