crafters: where to buy yarn

Hey I'm really getting into crocheting. Where do you buy yarn? I want to keep my hobby from getting too expensive! Where are the best places online or a real store to get it?

What projects are you working on? Giving any as gifts for the holidays?

Not sure where you're located, but if you have a Crafts 2000 nearby, they have great deals on yarn. I often buy their "mill ends", which just means that the end of the yarn is where their loom finished, so you'll have maybe 5 or 6 inches that are frayed. For half price/lb, it's an awesome deal!

Edit to add: I'm working on no projects right now, but I'd love to get back into crocheting! I have a bunch of yarn sitting around that would make a beautiful blanket for this LO, but I haven't even had time to begin :(

  • Michaels was having a sale on chunky wool last week. I got enough to make a small throw blanket thing I've been working on.

All the regular craft stores like AC Moore and Hobby Lobby have yarn, if you're in a pinch.

I'm into finding sales, especially if I can't get to a small, local shop.  If I can buy local yarn, I almost always do.  It's one of my favorite things to shop for when on vacation. But, that's not always feasible.
  • Michaels and JoAnn - use their 40% off coupon that they have almost every week :) Also Hobby Lobby - which also always has a 40% off coupon

  • I usually shop at JoAnn, mainly because it is closest to me. They have an app with coupons every week, and you can sign up for their e-mail coupons too. A lot of the time the e-mail coupons are the same ones as the app, but not always. Stuff is always on sale there too.

  • You could steal some from adorable kittens. They always seem to have them.
  • I've found some really cheap new yarn at Savers, it's like a goodwill. Some people donate excess craft supplies, I've gotten some great Italian merino wool before
  • www.knitpicks.com is one of the sites I like...they also sell crochet hooks and have patterns on the site
  • I am a yarn snob. I can't do yarn at craft stores like Michaels or Joanns. However, I understand the whole not wanting it to get out of hand. I agree wholeheartedly with those who said knit picks. Good quality and not terribly expensive. You can also try webs.com and paradise fibers.
  • Nice I will check out knit picks and also sign up for coupons.

I'm a beginner but have been doing some projects, I like happyberry crochet blog. She has videos that go slow enough for me to figure out. I just gave my friend a baby beanie, scratch mittens, and baby booties for her shower. They weren't perfect but they were pretty cute!

  • @HappyMonkey817‌ I don't mean to threadjack but I really want to learn crochet. I don't have any friends that do it. Is there a book or something you'd recommend. I remember the things you posted on Craft check ins were incredible.
I'll probably never be all that advanced but I'd like to churn out some booties or something.
  • I usually do JoAnn's. You can stack/use other retailer coupons there. The rule is that you can use one coupon per item you have as long as each coupon has a different barcode. So if you want to buy 6 regular priced skeins, you can use paper joanns, paper Michael's, paper hobby lobby, phone joanns, phone Michael's, and phone hobby lobby and get 40% off each skein. I've saved a ton doing this!
  • I taught myself how to crochet off of YouTube videos (it's free and if I need to learn a new stitch I can always find it on google). Can't post any pics from my phone, but I'm pretty good!
  • I love this! I actually just started crocheting this week as a way to de-stress in between studying for finals. (I love to invent new ways to procrastinate during finals week!). I am hard core obsessed now.
