Lip/Tongue tie?

Hey ladies -- after a girlfriend discovered her 19 month old had a lip AND tongue tie (which looking back were the cause of slow weight gain, painful latch, and lack of speech for him-- how his pedi missed this in his 19 months of life is baffling but that's a whole other story) it prompted me to check my LO... & I'm fairly certain he actually has a upper lip tie by the look of it and although he has no problem with weight gain-- he checks off all other symptoms (see list below) and I've experienced almost all of the symptoms on the mom side too.

Anyone have experience with this? We don't go in to get it checked till Jan 2nd, but in the meantime I'm doing some more reading and research on it (Gotta love Dr. Google) Any personal experiences would be appreciated! If your little one had it, did you get it clipped & if so when? Thanks ladies!

ETA: Since I've found out that lip tie can cause reflux/colic symptoms so now I'm wondering if his issues we've been having with those are because of the lip tie or if it's truly reflux? This will be another question for his pedi. image

Re: Lip/Tongue tie?

  • My LO had a small posterior tongue tie.  It was actually quite small but there were a lot of symptoms so we did decide to get it clipped.  I think it was a good decision, but it was hard to do.  A lot of moms have an easy experience--baby cries a bit, then they breastfeed and baby is fine.  We had a bleeder.  Also, she wasn't latching before we got it done so we used a bottle of pumped milk and that caused some extra blood to dribble down her cheeks.  It was really hard on me and my husband.  But she was really fine.  A little fussy that afternoon and back to herself that night.  Again, it was hard and apparently an atypical experience and we are glad we did it.  But yeah, rough.  The long term issues that come with the ties make us feel good that we took care of it early.

  • My LC noticed that my little girl has a slight lip tie. She said that because I wasn't having any issues she wasn't overly concerned and she wouldn't get it clipped. I'm now wondering if I should because she is suffering from reflux so badly...

@Lilwatz‌ oh man.. Poor little girl, I can't imagine how hard that was on you but sounds like she took it well!! Thank you for sharing your experience!

@CarrieAnne09‌ I think his is slight also, definitely not as bad as some of the google pictures -- and if it wasn't causing him issues I would leave it... But gosh... It's hard to ignore that list and not wonder if all of that can be relieved by getting this fixed (assuming he has it) I'll include a picture & maybe you can offer your mommy opinion .. Does your daughters lip looks anything like my LO? (Sorry for the large pictures)imageimage

  • @MrsG1019‌ - mine does look really similar. Maybe a little less even. I cannot for the life of me get a photo right now. She's so squirmy. I 100% agree with not knowing what to do. I can't help but wonder if this is the cause of her reflux. I have no pain though and she's been gaining like a champ. So I really don't know. I hate all the uncertainty!!

  • My husband has a lip tie and his front two teeth are super far apart.  From researching the procedure he learned that it was likely a result of the lip tie.  Obviously, the decision is yours, but if he could go back, he'd have had his clipped as a baby.

  • Thanks @Lilwatz‌ - I really am wondering if I should just do it. I hate seeing her in pain so it's hard to want to do but if it could help this reflux.

  • If doctor confirms a lip tie I'm definitely getting it done for him. The pros out weight temporary discomfort/pain as tough as it will be for him and my mommy heart. I've read (even on the Leche League site) that a lot of doctors fail to properly diagnose ties. The pedi if my friend I mentioned above says her son doesn't have a lip tie-- even though you can clearly see it & it was already confirmed by a specialist -- pedi said the specialist just wants her money. Here is her LOs tie.. The gap makes it clear that's what it is. I can't wait to see how he progresses and starts to talk once they have this fixed for him.

I'm surprised babies aren't regularly checked for ties at birth or with their first well baby visits. It seems quite common and with treatment could reduce so many issues for the little ones.

DS1 had an upper lip tie. His went undiagnosed until I found it around 9 months. At that point he had thrush ALL THE TIME! And the reason I found it was bc I was researching why my milk supply kept dropping. Turns out it's because he wasn't draining my breast each time so over time my body kept making less and less milk.

He had his clipped at 11 months. Way worse to do it that late because they had to sedate him. His was worse than your DS but it definitely looks like she could use hers clipped. Many kids "clip" their own during the early walking years by falling on a toy but since it's causing issues id say talk to your ped about referring u to either an ent or oral surgeon. HTH!

Edited to add: the recovery was cake for us. His only issues were anesthetia related. As far as pain after, he didn't even need Tylenol and was up and playing a few hour after. Even went for a walk outside.
  • Okay!! Appointment with pedi booked for Tuesday to take a look and see what he thinks. :)

Ds2 had a labial lip tie, class 2 and class 4 (posterior) tongue tie. It caused a lot of problems early on from 12+% weight loss, poor weight gain, low supply due to insufficient milk transfer, and eventually FTT (after his class 2 was clipped because the class 4 was undiagnosed). I pretty much EP from three weeks to 5.5 months, which was when he was ready to return to the breast. I still had to supplement due to weaning my right side since I had major letdown issues and he refused that side.

The class 2 was clipped at 11 days by a ped (second opinion), and labial and class 4 at six weeks by an ENT, also a second opinion. While there was some improvement, enough so that he could nurse without causing me a lot of pain and could transfer some milk, we had to continue working on his suck (disorganized). After the ENT visit I went from EPing all feedings to EPing day feedings and nursing him throughout the night.

We did overcome those struggles and he nursed until 21 months. But the first few months were very tough.

  • @AmyG*‌ - do you think her lip tie has to do with her short frequent feeds? And her getting frustrated sometimes.
