Next OB in February!

I had my OB appointment today at 11 wks 5 days and all is well. Heartbeat at 150 bpm and I'm healthy with no complaints other than some constipation and morning sickness still. I have gained 10 pounds since the start of this pregnancy but my doctor wasn't concerned.

At the end, I get scheduled for my 20 week anatomy ultrasound! I'm super excited for this. However, my doctor tells me to schedule my next OB appointment in two months. Thus, my ultrasound and OB appointment is on Feb 5th!

Is it normal to have two months between OB visits?

Re: Next OB in February!

  • Normally, I have a month between visits.  Each office does things differently, so this may be the norm at your office.  When in doubt, call and ask.

  • Seems like a long time. My appts are every 4 weeks but I can't really comment on what is normal. My 16 week appt is just what my doc calls a tummy check though. He uses a doppler machine to listen to heart beat. So maybe your doctor thinks it's ok to skip that one?
  • @dzashley ‌ That sounds a bit comforting. I'm not doing any of the genetic testing or other screenings so maybe since all went well today he maybe is thinking the "tummy check" doesn't need to happen.
  • Hmm seems weird. I'm wish a midwife and they tend to be less intensive/invasive than hospital procedures, and I'm being seen every 4 weeks until 22 weeks.

  • That seems a bit odd to me. I see my OB every 4 weeks and then when I hit 32 weeks it is every other week until I hit 36 weeks then its once a week.

  • I'm being seen every 4 weeks in addition to ultrasounds. So I was seen at 8 wks, 12 wks, have an u/s for genetic screening at 13 wks, will be seen at 16 wks, then a/s at 18 wks and will be seen at 20, etc. It has def crossed my mind that it's very often for a low-risk pregnancy but I don't mind. Insurance covers it so I'll take all the checks they want to give me.

Yeah seems strange. Basically all of my appointments are what some of you are referring to as "tummy checks". I haven't received an ultrasound yet and won't until my anatomy scan. I went at 6 wks (Q@A and bloodwork, 10 weeks heartbeat, 14 wks (tomorrow) heartbeat, and will probably have my next one at 18 wks, with the AS shortly after. 4 weeks seems to be the norm, then around 28 wks it goes to every 2 wks, then around 36/37 it's every week.

  • My Dr does every month so every 4-6 weeks I go in.. I went Nov 11th next is Dec 30th im excited I will find out what iam having I can not wait!

  • Seems really far apart for me but I think I need a little more comfort than others. I'm 14 week 4 days and have appointments scheduled for weeks 16, 20, and 22.

We had a few issues (with a false positive genetic test) that have caused me to have a few extra visits and hopefully the worst is over and am thankful baby is healthy!

You should call if you are concerned at all.
  • I have been seeing mine every two weeks--Last time they said I could schedule for 3 to 4 weeks..and I asked if I could come in sooner to hear the heart beat since I have so much anxiety--and they were fine with that.
  • Most likely when January rolls around and the crazy holiday season comes to a close, I will have some anxiety. Knowing me, I'll probably schedule a quick visit just to make just my little baby is still beating strong. It's amazing and so comforting to hear the heartbeat!

At my first appt at 10 weeks, my OB had me make an appt every 4 weeks for the next 4 months. I thought the opposite, like this was a lot of appointments. We opted out of the NT scan, so my appointment this coming week will be simple. Weight, fetal Doppler, questions, how are you feeling, yup, you're still pregnant, ok see you in a month. Seems silly when I have had no issues! But I'll go in to hear the little heartbeat and some peace of mind I guess.

As long as you are doing well and you have no history of complications, I think February sounds reasonable.

  • I think it depends on your health, whether your high risk or not and what your dr perfers. Mine would not see me until 8 weeks (and when I got there I was told I was only 7, ooppss) then not again until 12 weeks. My dr said it was normal for patients to come in again at 16 weeks but since everything was looking good for me and baby, he said to wait and come in at 18 instead for my next u/s. I believe at some point after that they will want me to come in every 4 weeks but I am taking the "every 6 weeks" schedule as a good sign and also...it saves me the time of having to take the time off work. You sound like you are right on track friend.
