Reflux ? Or what?

So I guess Grr is a happy spitter. He only cries when he's hungry. I'm BFing/FFing about half and half. Daycare says he spits up way more than other kids and they're concerned. (They just told us this yesterday). I mostly nurse him at home, and he doesn't spit up that often. So I don't know if we should try switching formula, call the doc, or what? When we started supplementing formula we were using whatever we had free samples of. Then we started buying it, and bought one type. we think maybe the spitting up coincided when we started using the organic brand, but are unsure. He's also pretty small, and at his 4 month checkup pedi was asking me questions about eating.

  • My opinion,

Unless he is in pain or not gaining weight, I would wait until your next well visit. Keep an eye on it and pay attention to his weight.  There seems to be a few options to try to help with spitting up; adding cereal to bottle, switching formula, medication.
With adding cereal you have to try to find a nipple that allows flow of the thickened formula, sometimes having to cut the nipple to make a bigger hole or buying tri cut nipples. I did this with my son and stressed over it plus wasted money on so many nipples. It helped, but was a pain.

DD is medicated with Zantac for reflux.  She was so uncomfortable, she would arch her back, couldn't lay flat, did not sleep much in relation to the reflux and gas.  I would not have medicated if she was not having those uncomfortable symptoms.

Changing formula can help, they even have formula with rice cereal in it, called 'AR'.  My DD did well when we switched to Good Starts Soothe.

  • I will call the pedi on Monday and see what they say. In the meantime we will switch formula. He was doing this weird straightening of his back if we went to put him in his car seat, but we thought it was normal. Maybe that's the back arching? My poor Grrr. I feel terrible if he's hurty and I didn't know it.
