NWMR - post weaning pain?

So as of Tuesday night, we are done nursing/pumping.  I did a full nursing on Sunday night at bed (I was down to one nursing session at bedtime only), and then Monday and Tuesday night instead of nursing I pumped for a couple of minutes to relieve pressure and I haven't done anything since Tuesday.  I am not engorged or full at all, but I have been having significant tenderness in both breasts.  The left one, it's only if you touch it/apply pressure to it/hold the baby on that side of the body, but the right one hurts probably a 1/10 all the time, and then significantly more if there's any contact.

When I weaned DS, I got mastitis, and it was nothing like this.  I don't have a fever or any other symptoms, but I don't know why I'm having this amount of pain with no clogs/engorgement/fullness/redness/fever/discharge/anything.  I'm going to call my provider today but I was there the other day and she wasn't really sure what it could be, so she is sending me for an ultrasound next week to see what's going on.  I'm just wondering if maybe anyone else experienced something similar?

Re: NWMR - post weaning pain?

  • By the time I stopped, I was only pumping 1x per day and I worked it down to short sessions like you did, and I didn't notice pain unless something was pressed up against me. It didn't last all the time. One thing I did do was take a dose of Sudafed (or any pseudophedrine product) when I was quite uncomfortable b/c it's supposed to decrease your supply. I just did it a couple times.

But if engorgement isn't your problem that probably won't help.

  • Yeah with DS, I had crazy engorgement like my boobs were porn star sized, and the pain.  So it was like obviously weaning related pain/discomfort since I was so engorged.  This time my boobs are all squishy and soft and not full at all but they still hurt a lot, primarily when something is pressed up against them.  It's almost reminiscent of pregnancy boob pain, but a lot worse.  I'm just not sure why the hell I would be having that much pain with no engorgement or clogs or any other symptoms.  I thought maybe like since my boobs are "changing" with the milk factory shutting down or whatever that maybe that could cause it, but no one else I know who's nursed seems to have had pain without engorgement.

  • I had that problem with no hardness/engorgment and my Dr. told me it was likely deep tissue clogs.  She recommended hot compresses and cabbage leaves to dry it up and it worked after 2 days.
  • I had weird random pains in my left breast when I quit pumping. It usually came after a let down sensation. After a week or so, it went away. It was like a soreness and I figured it had to do with weaning.
