BF Jaundice

LO has BF jaundice, not bad just .8 over what they want it to be. Dr wants me to watch how much he is intaking which means I need to pump. I pumped last night and we tried feeding it to him and the nipple was too fast which its the smallest medela makes.. What other brands of nipples can I try that will be slower?

    Second the Dr Browns :)

    ::Edit::
    You might also want to look into how to pace with a bottle as well if you haven't already. If the nipple is too slow your LO may get tired trying to get it out when all they really need is a little pacing with a newborn slow flow nipple

  • Thanks ladies. Just left Walmart and got the preemie and the slow flow 0+ bottle set so we will see how this goes!

    It is usually recommended to increase nursing or pump and give some supplement rather than to just pump and give bottle, as that comes with a lot of other issues, overfeeding with a too fast of flow bottle, difficulty pumping and bringing in a good milk supply with just pumping, and bottle preference and difficulty getting baby back to the breast.

    it's better to push to nurse every 2 hours and nag baby to nurse longer at the breast, use breast compressions and massage to speed the flow of milk.  Then consider pumping and giving whatever you pump up to about 1/2 oz affter feeds to top them off.  This is if diaper count is above the minimum of 1 per day of age thru a week and then 6-8 wet and or poopy diapers a day after a week of age.

    Just a suggestion to do some research as some doctors give directions to "just pump" like it's the easiest thing to do, while many moms struggle to pump, especially this early on.

    Thank you for the advice. I have been reading up on it and i was getting what you are saying with just supplementing with breast milk not just pumping only. LO on average has 5 poopy and 6 wet diapers in a 24 hour period. I will begin to set alarms to feed every 2 hours and pump to supplement. They are testing him again tomorrow so hopefully his levels will drop.

    THANK YOU FOR THIS!! My LO is in the same boat (12 days now) and is so sleepy still that it can be torture getting her to eat. I still BF (or attempt to) every two hours (three at night) and supplement with my pumped milk. I had her weighed today, and she actually went down half an ounce - cue mommy tears - it has been so frustrating trying to feed a child who latches well, but is just too sleepy most times. She is above recommendations for #s of wet and poopy diapers, so I thought everything was going well, but the weight threw me today. I'm glad I'm at least on the right track with our feeding plan - every Dr, nurse and LC we see has different advice.
  • I second the advice to put him in the sunlight. LO's bilirubin was increasing steadily until we started putting her in the sun. I put her in the window sitting in her rocker in just her diaper. It helped tremendously.
