Diaper Change poll and discussion.

edited December 2014 in November 2014 Moms
We are blowing through so many diapers, i am starting to seriously worry about cost. Our baby flips out if she's the slightest bit wet and seems to prefer going in a brand new diaper. Since she poops in phases I try to wait 10 minutes after a poop to see if she'll go again. My fiance thinks that is rude and unsanitary.

What's your changing style? If any or none of the options apply, please explain below.

  • I said immediate change.

Plus I would need to add "put her on the potty".   She has a very hard time bringing herself to poop in a diaper, so when we see her fussing and making that special sound and that unhappy face, we let her go in a plastic bowl.  We offer the bowl at other times, too, and she pees in it.   Definitely cuts down on laundry!  (We CD.)

  • @moroccojade‌ how do you know if the baby doesn't want to poop in the diaper OR she's just having a hard time squeezing one out?

  • I change him after each feed or if he gets upset (rarely) because of the mess he has made. He usually goes whole he's eating though. I think we probably change him 7ish times/day.

  • Oh and it was close to 12-15 the first month. So it's def gotten better :)

  • I change before every feed. If he poops I do wait about 5 minutes to make sure he gets it all out.

  • I said other. If it is just a pee, I don't change him right away. If it is poop, I wait ten minutes or so because he usually goes more than once. Thankfully, neither of my kids has been prone to diaper rash (at least so far with this one), so I am not super hyper about it.
  • We change her right away if she pees because itseems to bother her a lot. For poop we do wait a bit because she'll keep going for 10-15 minutes. If we don't wait, we just end up going through three diapers while she's on the changing table.

What I don't get is how to handle nights. How is she ever supposed to sleep through the night if she soils 2-3 diapers during the night? Are we just not supposed to change her until the morning? Or will she stop going as much (since we won't be feeding her as much during the night)?

  • Like PPs have said, we change every feeding.  If we hear a big poop, we'll change that sooner (but wait 5-10 minutes for additional rounds...).  If she only pees I don't use wipes, just change the diaper to avoid a rash.

We do part time EC. She is starting to trust that we will take her to her potty when she needs to go. (Just like many babies start to trust that you will feed them and freak out less when they are hungry. ;)

ETA... Physical signs point to no straining. As soon as she is in position the fussing stops and things really flow IYKWIM. No pushing necessary. Thank God. It's hard to watch a baby be constipated.

  • We change after feedings. We sometimes change in the middle of a feeding to wake up DS.

If we know DS is in the process of pooping, we wait it out for 10 minutes or so. He is a skilled projectile pooper and loves to surprise us on the changing table with round 2.

This is us too, although it's probably more like 5 minutes that we wait. Even so, LO loves to pee or poop a fresh diaper as we change it.

  • I usually feed LO with every feeding.  Before at night so he nurses himself to sleep, and then during the day before or after, whatever I feel like.  If I hear him poop I usually wait about 5 minutes to make sure he is done so that I don't get pooped on.  I always change every couple of hours even if he is dry because he is very prone to diaper rash, and I'm trying to keep him bum nice and dry!
  • LO wakes, gets diaper changed, then fed. If as she stools while eating, we wait 5-10 minutes before changing b/c she usually has more than one.

  • We buy our diapers at Costco. $20 for Kirkland brand (196 diapers) for size 1-2. I find it to be very reasonable.

Or, if you like a certain brand, look for coupons and deals.
  • It's a mix for me. I try to always change immediately once I know it's dirty, but sometimes exhaustion wins or I'll wait a few minutes until DH is free to change LO. The only time I will intentionally wait is if he is pooping because it tends to be while he is nursing and never all at once.
  • If he's dry when he wakes up I change him inbetween boobs to wake him up. Most the time he poops while I'm feeding him and I wait about 5-10 minutes before changing him.

    (Tmi story)
Last night tho, he woke up and I was changing him on the couch he rolled over and totally projectile pooped on my leg. Totally wasnt expecting it. In his week and half life I haven't been peed on once, but I sure have been pooped on lol

  • I usually change it as soon as it's dirty, but sometimes if I am hearing poop noises I'll give it 5-10 minutes to see if he's done.
