Breastfeeding and a bottle

My son is six weeks today, when he was about three weeks old we tried introducing a bottle but he had a hard time latching back on. Now that he is a little old and I'll be going back to work soon do any of you Breastfeeding moms have any ideas on how to give him a bottle but still get him to latch when I'm feeding him?

Re: Breastfeeding and a bottle

  • We had to try a few different type of bottles to find one LO would take. Also DH or grandparents give the bottle.

LO is 9 weeks and we have yet to introduce a bottle. I'm thinking we need to work on it. She has such a sensitive gag reflux that I have a feeling she's gonna gag on the bottles seeing as she gags on a paci. No useFul info here, just want to post so I follow this thread!

My LO gags on any type of paci as well, we finally found that she does the best with momma bottles.

This. Keep trying different kinds! Have someone else do it, if LO smells you he is gonna want the real deal!

We started introducing a bottle at 2 weeks because LO wasn't gaining weight. We are EBF but she was a lazy eater and would fall asleep while feeding so I started pumping and giving a .5-1oz bottle after feedings about 3 times a day until she got back to birthweight. She didn't have any latch issues or nipple confusion so we were lucky. She's 9 weeks today and is good at breastfeeding or bottle feeding.

I think what helped for us was that she was getting both breast and bottle at those feedings rather than having the bottle as a replacement. The bottle was a treat for her, like a little reward for eating well at the breast first.

Maybe try breastfeeding on one side and then giving him a small bottle as a snack after he finishes. If he's still hungry let him eat from the other breast so he doesn't get lazy. Eventually start to replace some feedings with a bottle and see how he handles it.

Also, try a couple different bottles to see what he likes best. DD has been doing well with medla bottles but yesterday I forgot to take a nipple with me when we went out and ended up having to use a Lansinoh bottle that we got as a free sample. She took it fine but she was a mess with milk spilling out of the sides of her mouth and she got a lot of air so she was extra gassy all night.

Anyway, hope that helps or you find something else that works for you! Good luck!

  • I second the idea of having someone else give the bottle. Our LO refused until one night I was on the phone with my sister and walked to a different room. He finally started taking the bottle.
Comotomo bottles have worked great for us. LO seemed to be missing the spray effect that happens with let down. But these bottles let you squeeze them a bit to help out with that issue. No gassiness and no trouble switching back and forth.

  • We've only given a bottle a couple of times. But I found this really informative: https://www.kellymom.com/store/freehandouts/bottle_feeding.pdf
It puts emphasis on easing the transition from breast to bottle and back. I plan on having anyone who will give the baby a bottle read it
