Eczema

Any parenting veterans out there? DD isn't diagnosed yet, but I'm pretty sure she has it.

I'm pretty devastated. She is pretty fair skinned like me, and I know how devastating skin issues can be for little girls as they get older. I'm determined to be diligent with this.

I switched to dove sensitive and slathering her in cetaphil, aquaphor, and eucerin. Any other tips?

Re: Eczema

  • My DD has it, and honestly after getting to know more about it I am pretty sure I have it as well but they just called it "sensitive skin" back in my day.  There are a lot of ways to manage it and some things work for some kids and other things work for others.  For DD we have a prescription steriod cream that will clear it up in a couple days when she has a flare up.  For maintenance she has to use moisturizer a lot and be careful about soaps (this is a problem when washing her hands at school, so her hands and forearms get flare ups a lot).  Free & Clear detergent is a must for us.  She is also sensitive to chlorine so she had problems at her old day care when they would use bleach to clean, and we have to wash her off after swimming lessons.

  • I'd be hesitant to mix cetaphil, aquaphor and eucerin.  I'd just stick with one in case there is any kind of reaction from mixing.

my kid has mild excema but we have been using aquaphor and it has worked well.  we use burts bees shampoo/cleanser and free & clear detergent.  Also wash her face very well after any irritating foods (pineapple, cinamon) because she will get a rash from that.  And keep her fingernails trimmed and clean-- she gets a crazy rash if she scratches herself, too.

    Good luck!

  • I have Eczema. Recently I have switched to pure Goats milk soap, and it has really helped. You can buy it at a Farmers Market, health food store, or make it yourself. I also use Coconut oil as a lotion and that helps as well.

  • She's barely 2 months, so no allergie as of yet @Lia1303‌ .

I'm not mixing all three products, @fusionbride‌ . Just rotating the three. She hates being rubbed down in stuff, so the cetaphil and aquaphor are much easier to use.

I'm breastfeeding, so hopefully nothing I eat will trigger anything?
  • I was hoping I wouldn't have to cut dairy
  • Baby Cerave, vaseline and a good dermatologist. Those are my best pieces of advice. They may give you a steroid to use to get in under control and then its just maintenance. When she gets older then you can start eliminating things and figure out what the triggers are. The main issue now is get it under control.

  • DS has it, we use cetaphil. Try not to mix too many products. And also don't bathe every day, less is better. We bathe like every 3rd day if we can get away with it

Is that better for you? I was reading on the national eczema site, and they said daily soaks and slather down in ointments and creams.

I find less baths to be a little more helpful. The water dries out their skin. Also use cetaphil soap. You can do oatmeal baths, but I wouldn't do them daily. I do put the cream on twice a day, morning and night.

The latest research for babies says that limited baths are best. The water from the bath dries out their skin, and moisturizing is key to prevention and care.

    This.
  • DD has it, I use Aveeno Eczema. When she has a breakout I put it on after every single diaper change. When I give her a bath I just pat dry her and put the cream on right after. I'm telling you I put that cream on her like 15 times a day and it started to clear up after 2 days. Now I use it to maintain. I realize that I'm lucky it's under control, but I'm also convinced that Aveeno is some miracle worker.

  • Fucking eczema.  DD2 has it bad.  During the summer, I had to get a different Rx from the one that she already had to help clear it up.  It worked great and quickly.  If you think it's going to be a problem that can't be treated with OTC creams (not lotions), call the pedi.  DD2's was so bad she was scratching and bleeding.  It was pitiful.

But don't be too concerned about her future skin.  I've been told that it clears up around age 2 for most babies.

We're maintain with Cetaphil cream in the morning and at night and maybe even a cetaphil body wash.  I can't remember what we use in the tub.
