Santa brings the kids and each of us a unique ornament every Christmas. We write the year and first initial somewhere discreet, so that every year we can reminisce about what ornament was for whom and such.
We don't do traditional "baby's first Christmas" ornaments.
At first we thought we'd get both the boys the White House ornament, but we figure we'll wait until another year to get DS2 one. They can have unique ones and that's great!
I bought 3 different ones from personalization mall. I ordered the same 3 for DS last year for his 1st Christmas. They are really nice - I like them a lot. Unfortunately, they sent me someone else's for 2 of the ornaments. Some baby named Kenji and a Claire. And my baby is not named either of those names!! They are resending them. But not like I'll get to enjoy them this year.
His official one has his name on it, so I'll AW the ones we made.
I want to have our kids pick out an ornament every year, and then when they are adults I'll give them all of the ornaments. So I wanted something of his to keep for myself.
We made salt dough ornaments the other night. I did DS's footprint and both dogs' paw prints. They didn't turn out too bad.
we did this one for ds1 and will the same one for each of the twins. their names and year are engraved on the back. our plan is to give them all of their ornaments when they get married/settle in their own house.
I've been ordering an ornament every Christmas from this company, engraved with the year, for the last 8 years or so I think (I have bought an ornament every year since DH and I started dating and living together 12 Christmases ago). They have great products and they are super fast. Usually 1 day turnaround time and 2 or 3 days max for mailing. Just thought I'd throw that out there if anyone is still looking to get an ornament before Christmas. And no, I have no affiliation with New England Ornaments. ....It's just one of the few companies that I have consistently received excellent products and service from so I just thought I'd share.
@apk4 can you post the recipe you used? I'm planning on nodding this but I want to make sure I have a recipe that works. What did you use to color them?
@persephonerose and @apk4 my MIL bought DH ornaments every year and gave them to us when he got married. Her mistake was she always bought ornaments with his name on them. So we have a massive box with "Eric" all over every ornament. The first year when I was going through them, I told him to pick 2-3 favorites and the rest just sit in the box. I didn't want our tree to be the DH tree. Now we use mostly bulbs but every time we go on a trip we purchase a Christmas ornament so now putting up the Christmas tree turns into reminiscing about the fun times we have had together.
I think it is a great idea, but I would avoid ornaments with their name on them for that reason!
@angeltennis3 Yeah, my mom buys ornaments for DS1 with his name all over the front. The ones we buy have the name on the back so when you hang them you don't see the name, for the reason you mention!

@cmcookaln I used this recipe, but bake them at 200 for 3-4 hours or until they are hard. They will rise at higher temps.
DH is getting me the bear one for Christmas. The hats will be labeled Mommy, Daddy, & Mason with 2014 written in the heart.
I work at Swarovski and the gals at my work gave me the blue crystal pacifier when we found out we were having a boy. I plan on using it as his 1st Christmas ornament.

This is DS2's first Christmas ornament (we bought just one, not the set). It's the one on the upper left. It looks much prettier in person than in the photo:

DS1 will be getting the White House ornament this year! It's perfect, because he loves trains:

I got an extra one of these to give to my parents for Xmas last year and this year. It's the one that actually came in correct. Good things it is my fav of the 3.
