Random kitchen question

Do any of you have shelves in your kitchen instead of upper cabinets?  Do you like them or do you wish you had cabinets?  I'm about to paint my cabinets and I keep considering putting up shelves instead.  I love the look in pretty HGTV-esque homes, but I wonder if I'll miss having places to hide my ugly stuff like plastic sippy cups and random beer glasses.

Re: Random kitchen question

  • Also some of them would be above the stove.  Will my stuff get all gross after awhile?

  • But look how pretty is it, TJ!

  • I'm sure if I invested in pretty multicolored fiesta ware and didn't have toddler plates, bowls, cups, and random character shapes comming out my wazzu I'd do that. However, I don't. So painted cabinets it is!

  • Stuff I don't use often but keep IN cabinets gets dusty too though.
I know, so imagine how dusty it would be without the cabinets to protect it!

  • I've thought of adding shelve in my kitchen. But I'd use them for dry ingredients.

    Flour, sugar, pasta, and such.

No way would I do that for dishes, unless I had pieces I wanted to be seen.

  • Could you not do a little bit of both? Have a few shelves for some of your pretty stuff and then have cabinets for the rest?

  • If it makes any difference, I already have a lot of kitchen stuff that looks nice on display.  I used to have a huge area above my cabinets in my old kitchen that I had filled and now it's all packed away because I have nowhere to put it.
  • Stoney, could you take the center out of some of the cabinet doors and put in glass instead?
I like this idea.  We have looked at several houses like that, and it looks really nice.

  • I love the look in the pictures above but I also like being about to close my cabinet doors when they get cluttered and disorganized.

My DH constantly leaves the cabinet doors open which drives me crazy so I know he'd be all for not listening to me nagging.

Depending on your kitchen layout maybe half and half would work?

I could, but the doors don't go all the way to the top of the cabinets and I don't think it would look all that great.  You would only see the bottom of anything I put on the top shelf.  Basically all my cabinets are stupid and any way I can eradicate them without spending a million dollars is something I'll consider.
  • Am I the only one who always feels like stoney is way more sophisticated than I am?
Why?  Because I can't afford real cabinets?
  • Well that's true Kelly.  Mine would look like those, but then there'd be a million dirty dishes all over the counter, no fresh flowers and the contents of the pot rack would be soaking in the sink ;)
  • LOL.  Y'all are crushing my open shelving dreams! Stop it.
  • LLOL.  I just opened all the cabinet doors and left them so I can see what it looks like.
  • You know what, we have a cabinet door that won't shut all the way, and there's always like Mosquitos and crap flying in there. Once I found a spider in my glass. And it wasn't even one of the fat, easy to see ones. It was big but super frail looking. Like every day I'm glad I didn't pour my milk and chug it without looking in the glass first.
    LLOL!
