Explanations for DH

I've been trying to explain to my DH why Madeleine is a better option than Madison, and he just doesn't get it. I think if he heard it from people other than me, he would understand what I've been trying to tell him. So, BNB, please provide my husband with ALL the reasons that Madison is NOT a good option for our daughter.

ETA: Be as blunt and harsh as you want, please! No holding back ;)

Re: Explanations for DH

  • It's dated?  Honestly, It was dated like 10 years ago.

If you said the name Madison to me, I am picturing someone maybe 12 years old or younger, just like if you hear my name (another time stamped name) you are probably going to picture a woman in her 30s/ 40s (which I am.)

A Madeleine could be a baby, a school aged child, a teen, a middle aged woman or an elderly woman, easily.

The #1 reason I hate it (beside the boy name on a girl thing.) He likes it because he has a few students named Madison, so he hears it fairly often. All the Madisons I know are about 15-16 or younger.

  • Madison is plain to me, just one of blah, there it is. Plus it's 'unisex' and I agree with the dated point as well. I know of a couple of Madison's and they're all brats!

Madeleine is way better!! It's prettier sounding (IMO) and ages better
  • Madeleine is just so beautiful, feminine and sophisticated. Madison is just blah.

  • Madeleine is beautiful and timeless. Madison is ugly and time-stamped.

    Exactly this!

Both of these things! I keep telling this to DH about Madison. But he won't give me any reason as to why he doesn't like Madeleine. I don't understand why if he likes Madison, he doesn't like Madeleine...

@dreadpiratebuttercup‌ I just know that he says he likes the nickname Maddie which was why he suggested Madison. I said I think Maddie is cute, but that I don't particularly like Madison, and so suggested Madeleine as sort of a compromise/alternate option. I don't think its the "masculinity" of Madison cause our other options right now are Emily, Audrey, and Scarlett, all three of which I consider to be fairly feminine and classic, so it just doesn't make sense that he likes those but not Madeleine. It's just frustrating, I guess. Eta: thank you for the suggestions! Morgan, winter and hero were all on our list, but have since been eliminated. We've pretty much narrowed it down to the five I've mentioned above.

  • With Madeleine he can still use maddie as a nickname

Yep, that's what I keep trying to tell him. And why I suggested it as an alternate option to Madison. I just want our daughters name to be an obvious female name, and be something that will sound fine as she gets older. I don't mind nicknames at all, as long as they have a nice full name that they can use as they get older.

  • Honestly, if you guys have other options that you both still like, I'd veto. I mean, I wouldn't be a bitch about it, but I'd just straight up say 'this name is no longer on the table.' I think each parent gets some vetoes, for reasons or just because they don't like it. I don't know if that's helpful.

For the record, I like the other names on your list more than I like Madeleine. (I vote Scarlett, for the record)

  • As a Madeline myself can I recommend my spelling? People always get the spelling right off the bat without that extra e in there ;) but it's a beautiful name anyway you spell it! As far as Madison I for some reason don't see it aging well, I think of a 10 year old. I went by Maddie growing up and changed over to Madeline in my mid 20's and have always absolutely loved my name. Hope you can convince him!
  • 1. Madison is the Jennifer of the aughts (the AUGHTS, it's not even the aughts any more - it's time to move on), except Jennifer is a perfectly reasonable name and Madison is not.
    2. Madison is a surname not a first name - this is both blah and way too trendy to be acceptable.
    3. Madeleine is cute for a little girl, but also totally a name that a professional adult wouldn't feel like an idiot using. I have a coworker named Madeleine and she is one of the coolest people.
    4. Maddie is a precious nickname, but not a name for a grown up woman. If you really like the nickname, at least give your kid a solid base to fall back on.
    5. Have you read the Madeline books by Ludwig Bemelmans? The first one is a fabulous classic and your daughter would love it and feel special having a character that cool with her name (some of the other books are unfortunately racist and can be skipped, but the one where she has her appendix out is a personal favorite).

    Madison reminds me of medicine.
Madeleine is so much prettier. I know this is the correct spelling but I have to admit, I think it looks 'neater' spelt Madeline

Hello, dear husband of OP. Madison means "son of Maud." Is your child male? Are you or your wife named "Maud"? If you are named Maud, I'm sorry that your parents gave you a girl name, but that's really no reason to continue the cycle of terrible naming. Also, your wife has a veto, and she is going to use it, so you and Madison should start saying your goodbyes. Madeleine is beautiful and elegant and I think it would be a wonderful name for your daughter. However, you do have veto power as well, so if you have to scrap Madeleine along with Madison, that's fine. I suggest Magdalena as a good third option.
This is probably my favorite response. I literally laughed out loud. Magdalena is actually an old family name on my Grandmother's side, and I love the nn options (Maggie, Lena) but I'm not sure if I'm willing to commit to it.

My favorite from your list is Audrey (needs no nn)
Then Emily if he wants an nn it could be Emmie
The Maddy nn is so tired, but if you must do it go with Madeline
Scarlett is my least favorite, but could be nn Lettie?  Good Luck.
I think Audrey is probably my number one choice after Madeleine, closely followed by Emily. I know all three are fairly popular, but they are all names that I have always found so classic and have always loved.

I agree with @divinemsbee‌ . It's time to veto. Your other options are all lovely, and I also vote Scarlett.
Oh, trust me, I've already told him that I am NOT naming our* daughter Madison, but I'm letting him keep it on the list so he feels like at least one of our options was a name he came up with. And I totally know that he can also veto Madeleine, I'm just not quite willing to let it go just yet, which is why I started this thread.

  • One is an adorable name for a girl, the other is a city and an old man in a wig...
