Ok, so. If you were about to embark on a 12 hour car trip to upstate NY for the holidays, leaving Sunday the 21st...how would you do it?

Leave an hour before W's bed time, and drive the straight 12 hours, hoping W will sleep the whole way. Save money by not getting a hotel room.

Leave early afternoon Sunday, drive 6-7 hours and get to a hotel around 8pm. Pray that W isn't a nightmare in the car. Do the second half of the trip the next morning.

  • Because I know where you're going...it depends on the weather. My travel plans are depending on two things: you and the weather. The weather being most important.

I will say, we drove 12 hours overnight with LO in July, and it was fabulous. He slept almost the whole time and only woke to eat. I sat in the back with him the whole time (out of necessity). He was awake the next morning and ready to go go about his normal schedule. I'd do it again with him this age.

There is also less traffic at night. There are sometimes also less road maintenance crews if weather comes up. If you go with this plan, I'd make sure you have some idea of how far apart hotels are along your exits -- or at least rest areas.

  • SS- You should take a detour to Long Island and recharge. It's only 40 minutes 8 hours out of your way!
She's going to Rochester, right, @codypup?

  • We just took a 10-12 hour roadtrip during Thanksgiving.  We left right around lunch on the way there and back.  He slept a majority of the trip there, but not on the way back.  Our plan was to drive straight through depending on how he was and stop the night somewhere if needed.  I'd say just go with the flow and see how she does.

My fear of driving through the night... is what if it's crazy snowy? In the dark, on roads we've never traveled before? Also, are we both going to completely, 100% wiped out when we arrive? Even if we split it (I drive from 6-1am, he does the rest) that's not a lot of sleep. But it would also be soooo nice to just have it done.

But if we do split the trip, we'd be able to easily stop in Buffalo on Monday to see the $hells!

    So many optionsssss

  • We had about a 12 hour drive we made at the end of September, and we left at 4AM. We just put DD in her seat in her jammies, and she went right back to sleep once we got moving. She slept until 7ish (her normal), and we stopped for breakfast, changed and dressed her, and went about her routine. We basically stopped when she needed to stop (for feeding, or diaper change, or whatever), and we made it in 14 hours, with a 2 hour dinner stop (at my sister's). Not ideal, spending an entire day in the car, but that's what we did, and it worked out alright. We (MH and I, pre-baby) have done the overnight driving, and we both hate it (I am only good for an hour or two of driving at night-it stresses my eyeballs, making me super tired), so we were switching drivers way more than normal, and it just overall sucked.

Lol. Yes. I hate hate hate hate flying, especially over the holidays, so we opted to drive. We figured we'll be able to bring the gazillion things we'll need for W, take our time, and it'll be nice to have a car there.

Now it's just down to the logistics.

Can you sleep while H is driving and vice versa? You're going to visit family. You let them play with W while you and H take a nap, go to bed early that night, and you're good.

I think you'll be on interstate the whole time, right? I probably have a skewed perception because Buffalo, but the worst of the snow will be I90 Erie PA and north. I've driven multiple times from central Illinois to Buffalo at Christmastime, and the worst was always close to home. (Except the one time I won't talk about.)

Where in OH are you thinking of stopping for a few hours? Are you going to feel worse stopping and only sleeping for 4 hours? What if W wakes up and no one sleeps?

    We can have breakfast!

  • I picked SS, only because I know that DH and I would be horrible at driving all night. We did it once, in college, and it was awful. It doesn't work for us, for pretty much the same reasons @JackieP1023 said above.

However, if you feel like you could drive that long at night, then it would probably work out just fine for you guys to do it that way!

See there are so many variables!

Mapquest has me going straight up Lake Erie. I was thinking we'd stop outside Cleveland.

A winter storm could throw a wrench into our plans...we do have the flexibility to leave Nashville on Saturday if we need to.

If we did the straight 12 hours overnight, we'd take turns driving and sleeping but will inevitably be zombies the next day. But you're right -- we have family to babysit while we nap and can head to bed early.

Breakfast with the $hells would totally be an incentive to make it through the night!

Shell we might be able to make Sunday happen. For such a long drive, it makes sense to be in NY for a good chunk of time.

Are the rest of you SO JEALOUS of a Codypup/$hellMoney get together??!??!?

    lol

I might be a bleary-eyed mess, but hey, it could be worse! Does Mr. Shell know about this get together yet? Or are you planning on sneaking out of the house with a vague mention of "an errand" so he doesn't find out about your weird internet friends?

  • I would go with option 1. Leave at bedtime, you sleep while Mr. Pup drives. Then switch midway through.  I am also ridiculously jealous you guys are GTG. If I was closer I would just happen to be in the area that day!   /creepytessy

This. My daughter is almost 2 and a half and has never been in the car much longer than 2 hours. I hate long car rides too, though, so that's part of it.

  • I voted option 1, but would keep a list of possible hotels to crash in at various points in your drive should you need to because weather/W needs it/you guys can't stay awake anymore.

    Also, I'm totally #teamjealous
    This is brilliant!

  • Why am I leaving the area when everyone is coming up?! Haha! I voted depends on the weather. I haven't looked but that always makes my decisions for me.
@kbauer1022 are you in NY? (We've probably gone over this before...)
