I was due on November 10. The doctor had been keeping an eye on my platelets throughout the pregnancy because they were low. On November 7 at 9pm the doctor called me herself because she had just gotten my most recent bloodwork back (platelets at 108) and wanted me to go to labour and delivery first thing the next morning so she could do my bloodwork again and if they continued to drop they would possibly induce that day (Saturday). My platelets ended up going up to 118 so she scheduled me to be induced on Monday, November 10.
I arrived Monday morning and started the pitocen drip by 7:30am. Nothing was happening so they broke my water at 10:30am and contractions came on hard and fast but my body wasn't helping, I was only 1-2 cm dilated which I already was before being induced. They said I was unable to get an epidural until I reached 4cm. From about 12-3pm my contractions were only 1min apart and it was terrible but still nothing was happening. I have emetophobia(fear of vomit/vomiting) so I didn't want to get morphine just incase but around 2pm I gave in and was given a shot of gravol and morphine and it didn't upset my stomach thank goodness. It didn't do much for the pain but it helped me relax between contractions instead of dreading the next one for about 2 hours. Around 6:30pm they took me off the drip to give my body a rest. They restarted the drip at 8:30pm and immediately the contractions came back strong. I was still unable to get an epidural until 2:30am when I was finally at 4cm. After that I felt so much relief I was able to doze off for a few mins at a time. By 3:45am I was 10cm! Pushing began at 4:00am and he was born very healthy at 6:10am on November 11 after an episotomy. He was 7lbs 11.5oz. I was very happy to have made it through without being sick even though it was a long terrible labor. He is 1 month old today and we couldn't be happier!!
Re: Brantley's Birth Story - Emetophobia (late)
My sister also has emetophobia and she made it through labour without vomiting, too.
One of the first things she asked when SO called to tell her LO was here was whether or not I puked.
