3rd Trimester

Ok ladies, sell me your city/state.

I want to get the rock out of the Mid West in the next few years...DH and I are searching for a great location. What do you like about your city/state? DH is bringing up Florida a lot. Any Floridians out there with input? TIA!

Re: Ok ladies, sell me your city/state.

  • I can't sell you on my state because it sucks right now, but I live in "America's Finest City" and I would never leave.

San Diego is truely one of the best places to live.  It is a big city, but still has a bit of a small town feel.  The weather is fabulous, everyone is laid back, and the food can't be beat!!

  • I am with you...been in the midwest my whole life...I think our dream city right now is Denver.

I have also heard great things about Austin, Tx, but have never been...

  • Change could be great. What kind of change are we talking?
  • Right now? Lawton, OK. DO NOT move here...Lol. I'm originally from Lexington/Columbia, SC and things are great there. Housing is still booming and the economy is pretty stable.
  • How do you feel about moving out of the country? I'm from a little town in Ontario, Canada. Very centrally located to the large cities (45 minutes from Toronto. And, only an hour from the US border.

Effin cold winters, hot beautiful summers.....not a lot of crime....and no moose on the road. Can't say the same about deer and other wildlife though...sorry.

  • birmingham, al.  it's hard to sell birmingham to people unless you already live here.  I love the South though.

  • San Diego, California baby! Actually we currently live in Va beach, VA (do NOT move here) but we are headed back to cali because i LOVED living there as soon as DH finishes grad school and ends this tour (can you tell we're navy?!)

  • Yeah... my aunt and in laws are both in Florida and have been trying to sell their houses to leave for 2 years... the insurance is insane and property values have plummetted.

If I had my choice I would probably move to Virginia. I lived there for a summer in Newport News and loved it.

  • Dont move to Chicago....its freaking sucks asss! Jessi, I am looking forward to moving to Orlando someday. I love it there and I would love to be close to my favorite mouse.

  • DH and I just moved to Raleigh, NC from NJ.  While I am extremely homesick, I do like it.  The housing is so inexpensive, compared to where we came from, plus the job market is still pretty strong.  There seems to be a lot to do here although we haven't ventured out too much, due to the pregnancy I have been a real homebody.  GL!
  • We were discussing Colorado Springs but I don't know...I'm a Mediterranean/Tropical girl, although I do like the 4 seasons....Sigh...Where to end up?
  • I was born and raised in Florida and attended UF. Most of my family still lives there. I love the place as my native home, but DON'T move to Florida! Hot as hell, high insurance rates (even if you live in the middle of the state, well away from the ocean), and if you're near Orlando or Miami, hellish traffic. Did I mention the mosquitoes, snakes, and unbearable humidity?

I actually like where I'm living now (near Raleigh, NC), but I can't recommend moving here, either, since I'd hate for it to get more crowded. ;)

  • Duh - Bumptown, USA! LOL

  • As MamaMyers said, San Diego really is America's Finest City... For families, it can't be beat. We have the world famous San Diego Zoo, Sea World, Legoland and are only an hour and a half away from Disneyland. We also are on the coast with beaches and have skiing two hours away at Big Bear.

Make sure to research the public schools.  They suckass for the most part.  If you are thinking of moving to Orlando I can recommend certain areas to look into and which ones to stay away from at all costs.  It's really not THAT bad for the most part except that I refuse to put my children in the public schools.  And I hate not having seasons.  Sure, it's awesome that it's in the 70's (today at least) in January but when it's 90 degrees on xmas day it just puts you in a bad mood.

  • Raleigh NC is great!! Mild winters, beautiful fall and spring and hot summers.  3 hours from the beach 4 hours from the mountains and the economy is pretty good still.
  • Northwest OKC, OK

Freaking awesome!  I love it!  Clean, great schools, great houses, great jobs!  The city has been referred to as recession proof.  :)

  • My hometown of Port Orchard, WA.  We just moved back here after living in Los Angeles for 4 years and I'm SO HAPPY to be back.  We have a little bit of a meth problem in the boonies (most small towns do) but it's not a huge problem.

On Christmas day our car stalled at a stop sign.  In LA we would have either been honked at for hours or shot.  In Port Orchard, 3 people pulled over and asked if we were ok, and if we needed jumper cables,  When our car got started again we were told to drive safely and have a very Merry Christmas.  Ahhhh, home!

  • LOL@ all of you! Now I know where NOT to go:) That's a good thing, I appreciate it! San Diego is sounding nice....How do you keep up with the high cost of living though? From what I've seen it looks tough to do with the current economy. Thoughts?
  • NC is sounding nice too...Is there a particular neighborhood/suburb that is nice? How are schools overall there?
  • I'm from the DC area and now live in Columbia, SC. I have to say that I wouldn't recommend either. Instead I would recommend Charlotte, NC. It's a great mix between big city/small town and the housing is still reasonable while having all of the amenities of a larger area. My sister lives there and absolutely loves it.

  • I grew up in the Baltimore/Washington area.  I loved being close to museums in DC, Inner Harbor, and within driving distance to lots of places - mountains in PA, Ocean City, New York City, etc.

We wound up moving from there after 18 months because cost of living was so high and traffic had gotten really bad.  We also got sick of the same strip mall landscape.  The weather extremes (humidity and extreme cold) really bothered my DH but he's English and he's used to 50F windy/rainy year round.

  • I love Orlando.
Im right outside of it, so I hardly get traffice.

    30 mins from the beach.

And the schools here are great!

I am so jealous!!! Denver is great. My brother used to live out there and I visited him all the time...there is so much to do, and you still have winter, but its not a miserable winter like here in Chicago! Plus I love snowboarding...and the mountains!

I have also hear Portland, OR is a great place to live!

  • Chester County, PA (particularly West Chester) - super cute, friendly town.  Very family friendly and much, much more affordable than where we were near DC!!!

  • Sorry, I'm a midwest girl and I wouldn't trade it for anything! My job allows me a LOT of travel, and I find that the people in the midwest are by far my favorite! Good luck, though! There are tons of cities that I love to visit... just like to be close to home ;)

  • We live in So. Florida and my husband, who is from Denver hates it.  I guess I've just become used to it, but home prices are still way too high, home insurance will bankrupt you and property taxes are obscene.

Schools -- could go either way.  Depends where you live down here.

As for weather, it's basically always hot and humid.  That could be a good thing if you come from a cold place and are over that scene.

Once DH finishes school and we don't have to think about in-state tuition, we will probably be moving to Denver (have visited, loved it, but am terrified on winters and driving of ice) or California.

DH loved Sacramento when he was stationed there, so that's an option.

I hear all you ladies on San Diego, but isn't it super expensive to live there too?

  • I live right outside Philadelphia. We have a great entertainment, cultural and (of course) historic scene and proximity to so many things including NYC, Washington DC, Baltimore, Lancaster County, the Poconos, and Atlantic City and Jersey Shore. Our winters are pretty bearable. We are even seeing a pretty good job market despite the status of the rest of the country. I love living here.
  • H-Town- Need I say more? It's the best.
