What size prefolds?

We are planning on prefolds and covers until our OS pockets fit; I'm thinking of ordering GMD but was wondering if I should get the newborn size or size small? I don't want them to be bulky but I also don't want to have leaks and blowouts. It's my understanding that newborns go through more changes with smaller pees/poops? Also how many covers and in what size?

Re: What size prefolds?

  • Yes, you really need to get newborn size. I had 24 of both newborn and small. Then I had various newborn AIOs. I has I think 5 covers also in small.

  • Definitely newborn and maybe also some small.

  • I had NB.  DD outgrew the absorbancy far before the size.  They were less bulky but I found I was having to add things for absorbancy (ie; flannel wipes, small doubler, or another prefold trifolded).  Doing it again I would probably start with small.  They would be a little bit bulky but I wouldn't mind.
  • It was my first time using cloth diapers of any kind and I only had newborn prefolds and wish I had smalls too. Since I already have NB I will probably purchase some smalls next time around but if I could do it all over again I might just get smalls. But that's based on how quickly my LO grew and may not have anything to do with your situation :)

  • Thanks ladies, I'll get 12 newborn and 24 size one (they're sold in multiples of 12). Do you all think 6 covers is enough? I was thinking bummis, rumparooz, or thirties, will the one size really fit from newborn until my one size pockets fit?

  • I would recommend 6-8 covers.  I preferred 8.  I like Imagine NB covers.  They are affordable.  They are soft and snap down really small.  But they fit for a long time too.
  • I would 2nd the imagine covers, they will a little big at first, but our little one can still wear them at almost 6 months old and 15ish lbs.

  • The imagine NB covers still don't fit R's legs, and she's 8 pounds 10 ounces.

  • Or add in a couple SoftBums shells since they get really tiny and are OS so even though pricier will last a long time.....and the Omnis can be used as pockets.

  • I really like the Thirsties Duos covers, but the size one was a little big around the legs when we brought DD home at 7 lbs 8 oz. She grew into them quickly though.
  • I'm new to the CD board, but I have been using CD with my newborn, and I'm a big fan.

We're using cotton prefolds right now. We had a stash of the GMD newborns as well as a set of Bummis (the smaller size). Bummis sells a starter set. I honestly think that set, a pack of Snappis, and an extra cover makes for a sufficient newborn diaper kit. I liked the GMD newborn sizes for the earliest weeks, but we are no longer using them at 3 weeks.

Do you know if you're having a boy or a girl? I like the slightly larger diapers for DS because I fold over the front for a little extra absorbancy.

  • For covers I had 2 each of Bummis NB, Blueberry, and Rumparooz, and also Thirsties but those were pink and I didn't use them much on my boy. I liked having a variety because different ones fit him best at different stages and I wasn't stuck with all one cover that may not have fit him at one point or another.
