Can contractions differ in pregnancies?

I'm 38 weeks along and to my knowledge haven't really felt any contractions... but I've been hearing lately that contractions can feel different other times around... this is my second baby. With my first contractions felt like menstrual cramps that began to get stronger and frequent. With this baby I haven't felt any contractions like this. I've been feeling alot of discomfort, for instance I've been feeling a tightening in my public area and a horrible pain in my back every so often... could these be contractions? I'm not sure... has anyone felt different contractions with different pregnancies? What if I'm missing labor signs?

Yes my son was born a week before his due date....

My first pregnancy I only had contractions in my back. Even BH were mild, painless twinges in my lower back. I didn't realize I had been having them at all until labor started and those little twinges were stronger and now painful.

This time BH are in front so hoping I don't have back labor again.

Yeah, it could definitely be back labor. It's often caused if the baby is faced a little funny and pressing a nerve.
