Pumping question.

I just started Ep after ebf was not working and my Lo not gaining birth weight back fast enough. When can I expect my supply to be enough for her so I don't have to supplement formula anymore? She takes about 3 oz every 3 hours give or take and I'm not pumping 3 oz every time. Any tips or tricks you can help me with? I pump at least every 3 hours I try to do two durning the day and I go from about 15 to 20 min depending on if my son needs me or if Lo is content.

Re: Pumping question.

  • You can try a power hour- the LC in the NICU suggested it for me. Do a full pumping, then sit I front of the TV for an hour and pump at every commercial for the duration of the commercial. You'd want to do it for 3 nights in a row and it's meant to simulate cluster feeding :)

  • My lc wants me to do it to get Lo back up to birth weight. I hate that she wants me to do it but she was thinking that Lo poor latch was effecting my supply and she wants me to get it up.
  • Good news is you may just need to ep temporarily. I had to ep initial but now lo latches with no problem (had latching issue). My baby is four weeks old and so far I don't have supply issues. I do notice if I hold baby while pumping I get more milk (while using my hands free homemade bra). Kellymom website has wealth of info too. Do lots of skin to skin contact too
  • Also if you give formula be sure to pump for that feeding too even if you have to store in freezer. This helps your body to know baby did need that feeding.

Have you tried a breast shield for the poor latch? It's the only way I could get my LOs to latch early on :)
  • If you want to be able to go back to breastfeeding I would suggest latching him on for some feedings. My baby no longer recognizes the breast as a food source.

  • My baby had no trouble latching, but I was in so much pain due to her tongue tie and natal teeth that I had to supplement to get a break. Make sure your lo is initiating the end of a feeding. Not you. I suffered through the pain and got my lo up to birthweight within a week after birth. Did you try drinking lactation tea or a super hoppy beer? Hops in beer is known to help (just don't get drunk!)
