Weird Rash!

Hello,

My 8 week old baby has broken out in a horrible rash! It started on his face and has now spread to his belly and shoulders. There are tons of small little bumps on his legs, belly and shoulders as well. I have just recently gone dairy free (about a week now) due to bright red blood in his poop and green stools. We have an appointment with the pediatrician this Thursday (12/11/14) but just thought I'd throw this out to see if anyone has experienced this and what it ended up being.

Thank you!!!!

Re: Weird Rash!

  • I'm bad at telling these things apart, but Kenzie has had a rash all over her body for over a week - it's a bad virus. She had it for days before she got the fever, but then we almost ended up at Children's hospital because it climbed so fast. Our doctor was able to identify it as a virus rash at first glance... I would go in.

  • My lo had a bad rash that started on the face. Spread to scalp, neck, shoulders, and chest. Doc said its a bacterial infection and to wash him with an anti bacterial soap and apply hydrocortisone. Another doc said its milk protein allergy eczema from a pic and to eliminate dairy from my diet and change to hypo allergenic detergent. It's been about two and a half weeks and the rash has come back several times when I stopped with the cream. I went to a dermatologist who said we needed to go to a pedi dermatologist if it doesn't completely clear up in two weeks. Kind of frustrated at the moment... He is clearly uncomfortable when it flares back up. ;(
  • Thank you all for your responses! He has been seen by the ped once already last week about it but the rash wasn't nearly this bad! She said it was just eczema and to apply Aquaphor ointment but there hasn't been any improvement :( to me personally it doesn't seem like eczema bc his skin isn't dry anywhere the rash is. And going milk free doesn't seem to be helping either but since it can take a couple weeks it may just not have had enough time to get out of his system.

AmandaJean12: What did they do for your lo? That must've been terrifying! Thank goodness you were able to figure it out before things got too bad.

Jennyc00: I feel your pain :( it's so frustrating not being able to fix everything for our babies. I feel like I'm letting my little guy down :( did you get the antibacterial soap from the ped? We are using Dove sensitive bar soap now for him. I'll be praying for you and hope you can find your lo relief soon!

My husband called the oncall doc now and left a message so hopefully we hear back soon! I'm freaking out something fierce...
  • I wouldn't take any risks, you're doing the right thing calling the on call. Poor baba :( hope all is okay.
  • So the first time we took her into the after hours clinic the dr said maybe heat rash or eczema or a virus (helpful, right?) I only took her back in after the fever started and one of our normal Drs said virus as soon as she saw it.

We couldn't do anything for her except monitor the fever and nurse a lot to keep her hydrated.

  • Thank you for the quick response, I really appreciate it! It really is frustrating when the doctors give such vague responses to worried parents. The on-call doc finally got back with us and said as long as there isn't a fever to just monitor him through the night and call the regular pediatrician in the morning when they open. I'm so anxious I can guarantee I won't sleep a wink tonight!
How long did her fever last when it started going up and how high did it finally get before breaking?
  • Just wanted to let everyone know that the pediatrician thinks he's allergic to other foods and not just milk. I have been drinking coconut milk instead of normal milk and she's thinking that's the issue. We have an appointment with a pediatric allergist now so hopefully we can get this poor baby happy and healthy!
  • I hope they find an answer for you soon @babybird2014.  FX its a quick and easy fix.

  • To answer your question I've been using cetaphil soap OTC. That's so frustrating cause my doc dismissed allergies so quickly .. Lots of docs seem to do it!! Glad your going to an allergist. We have two month appt Monday and I'm going to address it again. I'm not keeping my baby on steroid cream for longer than absolutely necessary. Seemed like he wanted to slap a bandaid on it instead of considering other causes. Good luck finding the problem!! I hope baby isn't too miserable. Cortisone cream works well for a quick temporary fix if it's bothering them.
